There is a new shingles vaccine, which is preferred to the older (weakened live-virus) shingles vaccine. The new vaccine is a recombinant vaccine. Recombinant vaccines contain only pieces of a virus. The newer vaccine is recommended for healthy people aged 50 or over, regardless of whether they have had chickenpox or shingles and regardless of whether they have been vaccinated with the older shingles vaccine.
