Mumps Outbreak New York State Breast Cancer Programs Shingles (Herpes Zoster) Vaccine When someone is first exposed to VZV, usually in childhood, the person develops chickenpox, a common, highly contagious, primary systemic infection that causes multiple "crops" of vesicles in multiple locations on the body. Chickenpox is passed from person to person through direct contact with fluid from the blisters or coughing or sneezing. Once the chickenpox has resolved, the virus becomes dormant, persisting in a latent form at the base of sensory nerve cells near the spinal cord and brain. Normally, the body's immune system maintains this latency and produces sufficient VZV antibodies to protect against future exposures. Shigellosis The term shingles is derived from the Latin and French words for belt or girdle, reflecting the distribution of the rash in usually a single broad band. This band is only on one side of the body in the large majority of people and represents a dermatome -- the area that a single sensory nerve supplies in the skin. The painful area may occupy part or all of the dermatome (see figure 1 below). Treating Nerve Pain That vaccine, Zostavax, had been the recommended option since 2006. That changed in March, after Shingrix was shown to be 91 percent effective at preventing shingles in those 70 and older, a rate that far surpasses how well most vaccines work on older age groups with less responsive immune systems. Getting it as early as age 50, experts say, gives the best chance of avoiding shingles, which is caused by a reactivation of the same virus that causes chicken pox and which can, in some cases, lead to searing and long-lasting nerve pain.  Clinical Trials in the Spotlight Clinician-Scientists Growth & Development Plasma Free Metanephrines (17) What type of physician should be consulted to treat PHN?
