It is a neurological disorder involving chronic itching and scratching. NP/PA laws Home → Stress is said to be one important parameter, among others, in the manifestation or aggravation of several psychological disturbances, psychosomatic illnesses, and psychiatric disorders, including burnout, anorexia nervosa, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), asthma, neurodermatitis, major depression, schizophrenia, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which are sometimes referred to as stress-related disorders. The notion that stress contributes somehow to onset or progression of these disorders does not indicate how strong the influence of stress is compared to other important contributing factors, such as genetic predisposition or organic diseases. Chief Editor Reprints Eshaghi H An article in a medical journal shows that addressing the psychological issue can be effective. This story begins with a 60-year-old woman who saw a dermatologist because she had an intensely itchy patch on her scalp. At times, her scalp itched so severely that she scratched the area until it bled. After 2 years of scratching, the itchy patch on her scalp was completely bald. One patient with neurodermatitis answered 3 questions and 1 patient with psoriasis vulgaris answered 2 questions. One patient with psoriasis did not list the age and 2 did not specify the gender. Table Table11 shows the demographic characteristics of both groups. Mean ages were 37.97 ± 14.45 (range 18-83, median 35) and 34.33 ± 13.84 (range 16-80, median 32) years for patients with neurodermatitis and psoriasis, respectively. The disease duration ranged from 0.03 to 480 months (mean 32.27, median 12) for patients with neurodermatitis, while the counterpart ranged from 0.5 to 552 months (mean 75.64, median 36). The two groups were matched for gender and age. The disease groups differed significantly in employment status, educational level, address, duration and age. Patients with neurodermatitis experienced high level of education and short disease duration. 1 (415) 234-4124 Third Trimester Departments & Centers Eek! It's Eczema! It was usually contracted by the patient from the vaccination of themselves or their close relatives. This condition had a high mortality rate (up to 25%). In the current climate of threats of bioterrorism, vaccination may once again become necessary, and physicians should be aware of eczema vaccinatum in this setting. Tackle Asthma Neurodermatitis belongs to allergic dermatosis group, and is the most common skin disease. Neurodermatitis is the multifactorial disease, in the development of which functional disorders of nervous system, immune disorders, and allergic reactions, as well as genetic predisposition have the greatest importance. I thank Drs. W. Burgdorf, M. Noethen, and H. Williams for their review of an earlier version of the manuscript and helpful discussion, and I thank all colleagues, fellows, and students who have studied the genetics and inflammatory mechanisms of atopic dermatitis with me. Talking with a counselor can help you learn how your emotions and behaviors can fuel — or prevent — itching and scratching. Wakugawa M Also known as neurodermatitis, lichen simplex chronicus is a localized pruritic eruption that results from chronic scratching and rubbing, eventuating in a scratch–itch–scratch cycle. Clinically, lesions appear erythematous or hyperpigmented, lichenified and scaly. High-potency topical steroids are often required to break the cycle. Steroid-impregnated tape, such as flurandrenolide (Cordran), applied at bedtime or after bathing and left in place for up to12 hours, also protects the lesions from being scratched. When symptoms improve, the potency of the steroid and the frequency of use can be reduced. Topical doxepin relieves pruritus and also helps break the cycle, but systemic absorption and drowsiness sometimes limit its use. If applicable, lesions can be covered with dressings, such as an Unna boot, to prevent the patient from scratching. More nodular lesions are termed prurigo nodularis, or picker’s nodules. Page Header Page Content Page Footer Neurodermatitis, also known as lichen simplex chronicus, is a common chronic skin disease, affecting up to 12% of the total population, and women are more affected than men1. The disease is characterized by lichenificated plaque as a result of excessive scratching. Neck, elbow, ankles, vulva, eyelid even faces are the most common affected sites. Although neurodermatitis is not life-threatening, it can produce an important psychosocial burden. It has been suggested that patients with neurodermatitis suffer from depression, anxiety and other treatable psychological disorders2. Negative emotional states are the main personality component of patients (greater tendency to pain avoidance, greater dependency on other peoples' desires, and more conforming and dutiful)3. Patients with neurodermatitis tend to have poor social skills or interpersonal resources and a lack of flexibility. Neurodermatitis may be associated with sleep disturbance and sexual dysfunction4. All these data constitute a growing body of evidence indicating a negative impact of neurodermatitis on patients' quality of life (QoL).
