The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to assess sexual function. It is a self‐reported measure of sexual function that has been validated on a clinically diagnosed sample of women with female sexual arousal disorder. The questionnaire is composed of 19 items divided into 6 domains that include desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain. Each item is scored on a scale of 0 (or 1) to 5 (range for items 1, 2, 15, and 16 is 1–5), and each domain is scored with the total of the items (maximum scores 10–20) (Rosen et al, 2000). Higher scores indicate better function, and a domain score of zero indicates no sexual activity during the past month. The impact of neurodermatits and psoriasisi on sexual function had been studied previously. Inconsistent with our data, Mercan S found that neurodermatitis patients had more sexual problems than the psoriasis counterpart12. The difference may be due to the sample size. There were only 31 patients with neurodermatitis and 24 patients with psoriasis, while the counterpart in our study are 149 and 246 respectively. Another comment is related to the questionnaire applied in the survey. DLQI was applied in our study while Arizona Sexual Experience Scale in Mercan's study. Although DLQI has question(Q9) about sexual life, it do not specifically evaluate sexual problems. Gender-specific sexual function scales and proper sample size will be needed in future study. Michigan Factors affecting skin barrier function might influence the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD). Previous reports have suggested higher rates of AD in areas with so-called hard water and among children born in fall or winter. This study looked for a possible synergistic relationship between these two AD risk factors. The researchers analyzed data on nearly 53,000 children from the Danish National Birth Cohort. National data sources were used to gather birth data and information on domestic water hardness, which differs across Danish regions. Physician diagnosis of AD and other characteristics were assessed in parental interviews when the children were 6 and 18 months old. Overall prevalence of AD was 15.0%. Prevalence ranged from 13.5% to 17.1% in regions with the softest versus hardest domestic water; relative prevalence of AD increased by 5% per 5-degree increase in water hardness. Hard water accounted for an estimated 2% of the population risk of AD. Relative prevalence of AD was 24% higher for children born in fall and 18% higher for those born in winter. There was no evidence of interaction between season of birth and water hardness. Both hard domestic water and fall/winter birth are associated with a higher prevalence of AD in early childhood. Risk of AD increases along with degree of water hardness, but there is no synergistic interaction between these two risk factors. Further studies are needed to see if water softening can reduce AD risk in infants. Immunol Allergy Clin North Am. 2002; 22: 1-24 An irritant initially causes the person to scratch the affected area, and the skin thickens after contact. The itch typically begins during a stressful period and lasts after the stress subsides. Search for articles by this author Mobile site version Comments from Stan Fineman, MD: Skin barrier impairment in newborns is a potential risk factor for AD. Water can be a skin irritant and hard water, with high calcium carbonate, could cause even more irritation. This report from the Danish National Birth Cohort is unique since the geology of Denmark is unusual, with the country separated by a “main stationary line” caused by glaciers. The risk for developing AD increased by 5% for each 5 degrees of domestic water hardness, suggesting that using softer water could potentially be a primary prevention measure. Although the prevalence of AD increased in infants born in the colder seasons as expected, there was no synergism with hard water exposure. Maybe we should pay closer attention to the hardness of our local water.
