The causative agent is the herpes simplex virus, especially of type 1, which causes damage to the upper respiratory tract and skin around the nose and mouth. Virus of the type 2 is less common, it affects mucous membranes and skin of genital organs. The disease begins acutely in 5-7 days after the contact with an ill person with herpes simplex and is manifested by chills, body temperature up to 40°C, weakness, adynamics, prostration. After 1-3 days rashes of small, to the size of a pinhead, bubbles, filled with serous, less commonly with hemorrhagic content appear. Later bubbles turn into pustules and acquire a typical appearance from navel like impression in the center. In the evolution of the elements bleeding erosions are formed, their surface is covered with hemorrhagic crusts. Patient's face acquires "mask-like" appearance. The lesion of mucous membranes proceeds as aphthous stomatitis, conjunctivitis, and keratoconjunctivitis. 66 Previously featured Research & Background Dermatitis Herpetiformis Wittmann M Search database Scopus (205) Eczema / skin reactions In a longitudinal study of 7157 children and adolescents with AD from the Pediatric Eczema Elective Registry, researchers found that symptoms of mild to moderate AD are likely to persist into the teen years or beyond. ABSTRACT: Neurodermatitis is a chronic disease affecting the patient's psychosocial status and quality of life. It is associated with a variety of psychologic problems, including demoralization, depression, anxiety, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, and sleep disturbances. Coexistence of sexual dysfunction, especially in women, with several systemic diseases has gained interest in recent years. In this study, we evaluated sexual function in female patients with neurodermatitis. We enrolled 89 women (43 patients, 46 controls) in the study. Quality of life was assessed with the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to determine sexual function. Individuals with psychiatric disorders and/or those using antidepressants were excluded. The total DLQI score was 11.95 ± 5.65 in patients with neurodermatitis. The total FSFI score was significantly lower in patients compared with healthy controls (22.76 ± 5.31 and 28.83 ± 3.50, respectively; P = .001). Domain scores of FSFI (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction) except pain were significantly lower in patients with neurodermatitis (P = .001). The pain score was also lower in patients than controls, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = .073). Neurodermatitis may be associated with sexual dysfunction, and patients with neurodermatitis should be evaluated with regard to sexual function to provide a better quality of life. Learn more The epidermal barrier dysfunction hypothesis suggests that AD patients develop AD as a result of skin barrier defects that allow for the entry of antigens, resulting in the production of inflammatory cytokines. Some authors question whether such antigens can also be absorbed from the gut (eg, from food) and/or the lungs (eg, from house dust mites). Xerosis and ichthyosis are known to be associated signs in many AD patients. Clinically, 37-50% of people with ichthyosis vulgaris have atopic disease and up to 37% of people with AD have clinical evidence of ichthyosis vulgaris. Mutations in the gene encoding filaggrin, a key epidermal barrier protein, cause ichthyosis vulgaris and are the strongest known genetic risk factors for the development of AD.
