According to question 9 of the DLQI, sexual function was affected in our patients with neurodermatitis. When we looked at the total and individual scores from the FSFI, the total score was significantly decreased in female patients with neurodermatitis compared with that in controls. Analyses of each domain showed that scores for desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction were significantly decreased in these patients. The pain score was also lower in the patient group than in the control group, although the difference was not statistically significant. As observed in Niemeier et al (1997) and Mercan et al (2008), we conclude that neurodermatitis often results in sexual dysfunction. We also conclude that neurodermatitis has effects particularly on the desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction components of sexual function in female patients. [8] AD has enormous morbidity, and the incidence and prevalence appear to be increasing. Further, AD is the first disease to present in a series of allergic diseases such as food allergy, asthma, and allergic rhinitis (in order), provoking the “atopic march” theory, which suggests that early or severe AD and cutaneous sensitization to environmental allergens may lead to subsequent allergic disease at other epithelial barrier surfaces (eg, gastrointestinal or respiratory tract). This hypothesis is supported by cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. [1] Williams HC, Pembroke AC, Forsdyke H, Boodoo G, Hay RJ, Burney PG. The authors of that paper proposed that it was a response to chronic rubbing, possibly with other contributing factors such as xerosis, contact with irritants, and emotional distress. The lesions were red to flesh colored, pruritic papules 3–8 mm in diameter. There was a cobblestone appearance in some later lesions. Lesions were unilateral in 33/44 cases and bilateral in 11/44. The histology showed mild compact orthokeratosis, flattening of the rete ridges, superficial dermal fibrosis, and a mild to moderate superficial and mid-dermal infiltrate of lymphocytes, histiocytes and a few eosinophils. Stellate cells were present, probably a reflection of scratching. The published photomicrographs show some resemblance to pigmented purpuric dermatosis but there was no hemosiderin.
