It causes patches of itchy skin that lead to scratching, which makes you feel even itchier. The condition isn’t contagious. It may be due to something that irritates your skin, like a bug bite or tight clothes that trigger the itch-scratch cycle. Keep your body at a comfortable temperature. Heat and sweat can irritate your skin, causing the itch to flare. References: SPOTme® Skin Cancer Screening Program Go back to Atopic Dermatitis Exposed. LEAVE THIS SITE © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Strange but true Patients with atopic dermatitis need safe and effective long-term treatments. Previous studies have suggested benefits with dupilumab: a human monoclonal antibody against interleukin (IL)-4 receptor alpha that inhibits signaling of the type 2 cytokines IL-4 and IL-13. Two randomized, placebo-controlled trials of dupilumab for AD are reported. The SOLO 1 and 2 trials included 671 and 708 patients, respectively, with moderate to severe AD that was inadequately controlled by topical medications. Patients were assigned to 16 weeks of treatment with dupilumab, 300 mg given weekly or alternating with placebo every other week; or placebo given weekly. The primary outcome was a score of 0 or 1 on the Investigator's Global Assessment, indicating clear or almost clear of AD; plus at least a 2-point reduction in the same score from baseline to 16 weeks. The primary outcome was achieved in 37% of patients receiving weekly dupilumab and 38% with dupilumab every other week, compared to 10% with weekly placebo. Results were similar across the two trials. The dupilumab groups were also more likely to achieve at least 75% improvement in the Eczema Area and Severity Index. Other key outcomes were also improved with dupilumab, including pruritus, anxiety and depression symptoms, and quality of life. The main adverse effects of dupilumab were injection site reactions and conjunctivitis. The SOLO 1 and 2 results show significant improvement in AD signs and symptoms with dupilumab over 16 weeks. The benefits appear similar with treatment given weekly or every other week, compared to placebo. Further studies are needed to establish dupilumab's longterm safety and effectiveness. Corinna Weber-Schöndorfer, in Drugs During Pregnancy and Lactation (Second Edition), 2007 Lichen simplex chronicus (LSC) (also known as neurodermatitis[1]) is a skin disorder characterized by chronic itching and scratching.[2] The constant scratching causes thick, leathery, darkened, (lichenified) skin. This condition is associated with many factors, including the scratch-itch cycle, psychological stressors, and atopy. LSC is more common between ages 35 and 50 and is seen approximately twice as often in women compared to men.[3] Simpson EL, Bieber T, Guttman-Yassky E, et al. Two phase 3 trials of dupilumab versus placebo in atopic dermatitis. N Engl J Med. 2016;375:2335–2348. Your doctor may diagnose neurodermatitis by examining the affected skin and determining whether you've been itching and scratching. To rule out other causes, he or she may take a small sample of the affected skin (skin biopsy) for testing. Insect bites and emotional stress are the two most prevalent causes of the lichen simplex. Network adequacy One of the most serious complications, which can accompany neurodermatitis, is Kaposi's varicelliform eruption, due to which lethality ranges from 1.6 to 30% among children. The causative agent is the herpes simplex virus, especially of type 1, which causes damage to the upper respiratory tract and skin around the nose and mouth. Virus of the type 2 is less common, it affects mucous membranes and skin of genital organs. The disease begins acutely in 5-7 days after the contact with an ill person with herpes simplex and is manifested by chills, body temperature up to 40°C, weakness, adynamics, prostration. After 1-3 days rashes of small, to the size of a pinhead, bubbles, filled with serous, less commonly with hemorrhagic content appear. Later bubbles turn into pustules and acquire a typical appearance from navel like impression in the center. In the evolution of the elements bleeding erosions are formed, their surface is covered with hemorrhagic crusts. Patient's face acquires "mask-like" appearance. The lesion of mucous membranes proceeds as aphthous stomatitis, conjunctivitis, and keratoconjunctivitis. Leung DY, Bieber T. Atopic dermatitis. Lancet. 2003 Jan 11. 361(9352):151-60. [Medline].
