Clinical implications are discussed. Causes & Triggers Atopic dermatitis is the most common of the many types of eczema, which is a general term for disorders that produce skin inflammation. Lichen simplex chronicus (lie-KEN SIM-plex kronik-CUS) is also known as neurodermatitis because it’s considered a neurological skin disorder fueled by the itch-scratch cycle. Lichen simplex chronicus (neurodermatitis) appears in patches on the neck, scalp, shoulders, feet, ankles, wrists and hands. The affected patch of skin becomes thick, leathery and even itchier the more it is rubbed or scratched as a result of irritated nerve endings in the skin. One of the most serious complications, which can accompany neurodermatitis, is Kaposi's varicelliform eruption, due to which lethality ranges from 1.6 to 30% among children. The causative agent is the herpes simplex virus, especially of type 1, which causes damage to the upper respiratory tract and skin around the nose and mouth. Virus of the type 2 is less common, it affects mucous membranes and skin of genital organs. The disease begins acutely in 5-7 days after the contact with an ill person with herpes simplex and is manifested by chills, body temperature up to 40°C, weakness, adynamics, prostration. After 1-3 days rashes of small, to the size of a pinhead, bubbles, filled with serous, less commonly with hemorrhagic content appear. Later bubbles turn into pustules and acquire a typical appearance from navel like impression in the center. In the evolution of the elements bleeding erosions are formed, their surface is covered with hemorrhagic crusts. Patient's face acquires "mask-like" appearance. The lesion of mucous membranes proceeds as aphthous stomatitis, conjunctivitis, and keratoconjunctivitis. FOLLOW US! See all (111) San Antonio, Texas View Full Article Williams H, Flohr C. This disorder begins as intractable pruritus with a crawling sensation in the skin. The patients are convinced that they are harboring parasites and usually bring “specimens” to prove infestation. These bits of material or skin must be examined to rule out a true infestation and to assure the patient of your interest in the problem. More than half of these patients have no visible skin lesions. Those with active lesions have excoriated, crusted papules secondary to picking. Illicit drug addiction should also be ruled out.
