Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)Treatment (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) Make Money with Us Narrow neurodermatitis is more common in adult males and is characterized by one or more lesions in the form of plaques of various sizes and shapes on the skin of neck, reproductive organs (anogenital area), elbow and popliteal creases. Plaques are symmetrically arranged delimitating relatively clearly from unaffected skin by the area of hyperpigmentation. In focus areas skin is dry, infiltrated, with an exaggerated picture, more pronounced in the center. On the periphery of foci small (pinhead) polygonal flat papules with a glossy surface of a brownish-red or pink color are located. About NEA Seal of Acceptance When to see a doctor Prophylactic medical examination of patients Formation of nodules Despite recent advances in the understanding of the genetics of atopic dermatitis (AD), the pathophysiology remains poorly defined. Two main hypotheses have been proposed regarding the development of inflammation that leads to AD. The first suggests a primary immune dysfunction resulting in IgE sensitization, allergic inflammation, and a secondary epithelial barrier disturbance. The second proposes a primary defect in the epithelial barrier leading to secondary immunologic dysregulation and resulting in inflammation. Recommend This Forgot password? What is an allergy? However, it's unclear how the skin microbiome during infancy affects the incidence of AD. This prospective study evaluated the effects of skin microbiome on the risk of developing AD during the first year of life. The study included 50 randomly selected infants from an Irish birth cohort study. Skin swabs from four sites relevant to AD were collected at 2 days and 2 and 6 months of age, with bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequencing and analysis performed directly from clinical samples. Patterns and changes in bacterial skin colonization were analyzed for association with the incidence of AD at 1 year. The types and diversity of bacteria in the skin microbiome changed significantly between sampling periods. In contrast to patients with established AD, occurrence of infantile AD was not associated with skin dysbiosis or colonization with S. aureus. Development of AD during the first year of life was associated with significant differences in bacterial communities detected in swabs from the antecubital fossa at 2 months. In particular, commensal staphylococci were significantly less abundant in infants who went on to develop AD. The skin microbiome was unrelated to mode of delivery or feeding method. Skin colonization with S. aureus does not appear to occur before the development of AD in infants. Early colonization with commensal staphylococci may have a protective effect against infantile AD. The authors emphasize the need for further research to understand the pathophysiology and mechanisms by which the skin microbiome affects the development of skin immunity and AD.
