Austen KF Close Discover & try ABSTRACT: Neurodermatitis is a chronic disease affecting the patient's psychosocial status and quality of life. It is associated with a variety of psychologic problems, including demoralization, depression, anxiety, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, and sleep disturbances. Coexistence of sexual dysfunction, especially in women, with several systemic diseases has gained interest in recent years. In this study, we evaluated sexual function in female patients with neurodermatitis. We enrolled 89 women (43 patients, 46 controls) in the study. Quality of life was assessed with the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to determine sexual function. Individuals with psychiatric disorders and/or those using antidepressants were excluded. The total DLQI score was 11.95 ± 5.65 in patients with neurodermatitis. The total FSFI score was significantly lower in patients compared with healthy controls (22.76 ± 5.31 and 28.83 ± 3.50, respectively; P = .001). Domain scores of FSFI (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction) except pain were significantly lower in patients with neurodermatitis (P = .001). The pain score was also lower in patients than controls, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = .073). Neurodermatitis may be associated with sexual dysfunction, and patients with neurodermatitis should be evaluated with regard to sexual function to provide a better quality of life. Coexistence of sexual dysfunction, especially female sexual dysfunction, with different diseases has gained interest in recent years (Cayan et al, 2004; Laumann et al, 2005; Bachmann, 2006; Hayes et al, 2006; Segraves and Woodard, 2006). Numerous studies have been performed in other disciplines of medicine about sexual dysfunction (Monga et al, 1998; Ambler et al, 2001; Koseoglu et al, 2005; Tikiz et al, 2005). [10, 11] More recently, basophils and newly identified innate immune cells called group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) have been shown to underlie the pathogenesis of AD. [12, 13, 14, 15, 16] Together, basophils and ILC2s are critical sources of the type 2 cytokines IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13. [12, 13] Further, these cells appear to be potently regulated by a family of epithelial cell‒derived cytokines directly released from damaged keratinocytes, including thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), IL-25, and IL-33. [17] Taken together, these studies highlight a new paradigm in which, in addition to classical adaptive Th2 cells, innate type 2 immune cells play critical roles in the etiology of AD through interactions with epidermal-derived cytokines. The skin may become thickened and hyperpigmented (lichenified) as a direct result of chronic exoriation.[3] Typically this period of increased scratching is associated with stressors. Kaposi's eczema can be complicated by the development of streptococcal and staphylococcal pyoderma, pneumonia, otitis media, and sepsis. After 10-14 days, rashes start to regress, and small superficial scars remain instead of them.
