Annunziato F Background: Neurodermatitis is a common chronic skin disease. Although not life-threatening, it can produce an important psychosocial burden, sleep disturbance and sexual dysfunction. Patients with neurodermatitis tend to have poor social skills or interpersonal resources and a lack of flexibility. However quality of life (QoL) of patients with neurodermatitis has seldom investigated. The objective of this study is to assess the impact of neurodermatitis on patients' QoL using the Dermatology Life Quality Index questionnaire, and assess its feasibility and internal consistency. The causes of neurodermatitis are many and varied. Genetic predisposition, environmental factors as well as inflammation taking place in the skin play a role. This reduced skin barrier is caused by a deficiency, an imbalance or defective functioning of substances (e.g. proteins or fats) that are responsible for the formation of the upper layer of the skin. As a result, more water evaporates and the skin becomes dry. In addition, the skin becomes more permeable to allergens and other environmental substances. These can trigger inflammatory reactions.  Register for more information ► Medical Anatomy and Illustrations info@aha.ch EN   Hello. Because the skin tends to be very thick and scaly in lichen simplex chronicus, stronger steroids may be required. Lichen ruber planus is characterized by scattered polygonal purple papules with navel like impression in the center, locating on the inner surface of upper extremities, the front surfaces of lower legs, torso. Sometimes, mucous membranes of mouth and genital organs are affected. During the lubrication with oil of papules network pattern (Wickham grid) is revealed. Moreover, sexual dysfunction may also cause significant personal distress and negatively impact quality of life (Thaipisuttikul, 1998; Abeck, 2005; Chuh et al, 2006; Burgin, 2008). In our study, we used the DLQI to evaluate the quality of life of patients. The mean DLQI score of 11.95 is similar to the mean scores of 11.20 and 10.53 reported for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, respectively (Basra et al, 2008). The scores on question 9 of the DLQI showed that neurodermatitis affected sexual function in our patients. Consistent with this observation, previous studies have revealed a higher prevalence of sexual dysfunction in patients with chronic pain (Monga et al, 1998; Ambler et al, 2001). Sexual dysfunction in female patients with fibromyalgia has been demonstrated (Tikiz et al, 2005), and sexual status and erectile dysfunction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have been suggested (Koseoglu et al, 2005). Sexual dysfunction studies on other systemic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, chronic liver disease, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, epilepsy, chronic renal failure, and multiple sclerosis have also been performed (Ermertcan, 2009). The Mann-Whitney U-test was used to test the equality of distributions of quantitative outcomes. Multiple logistic regression was performed to examine the independent effects of explanatory variables on DLQI scores. Construct validity was tested by factor analysis. Reliability was assessed by average inter-item correlation, item-total correlation and Cronbach's alpha. All analyses were done using SPSS software (version 13.0; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). P <0.05 was interpreted as statistically significant. Adjustments for p-Values were made. At times, lesions with overlapping clinical and histopathological features of both lichen simplex chronicus and prurigo nodularis are found. Prurigo nodularis is one condition in which the histological picture often lags behind the clinical appearance. The author has seen numerous cases, regarded by experienced dermatologists as prurigo nodularis, in which the histological picture was that of lichen simplex chronicus. Treatment success depends on resisting the urge to rub or scratch the affected areas. Over-the-counter and prescription creams can help ease the itching. You'll also need to identify and eliminate factors that may be aggravating the problem. Lichen simplex chronicus (neurodermatitis) appears in patches on the neck, scalp, shoulders, feet, ankles, wrists and hands. The affected patch of skin becomes thick, leathery and even itchier the more it is rubbed or scratched as a result of irritated nerve endings in the skin. Close Get to Know Us In the pathogenesis of neurodermatitis as well as eczema, the leading role belongs to a dysfunction of immune, central and autonomic nervous systems. The basis of immunological disorders is a reduction of a number and functional activity of T-lymphocytes, especially T-suppressors, regulating immunoglobulin E synthesis by B-lymphocytes. IgE binds to blood basophiles and mast cells, which start to produce histamine, causing immediate hypersensitivity development. A number of studies have reported that the financial burden to families and government is similar to that of asthma, arthritis, and diabetes mellitus. In children, the disease causes enormous psychological burden to families and loss of school days. Mortality due to AD is unusual.
