Female sexual dysfunction has recently become a common and important health concern that is influenced by medical and psychosocial factors (Cayan et al, 2004; Laumann et al, 2005; Bachmann, 2006; Hayes et al, 2006; Segraves and Woodard, 2006). In contrast to basic and clinical research in the field of male sexual dysfunction, the sexual problems of women have received relatively little attention and often remain untreated (Anastasiadis et al, 2002). In our study, we evaluated sexual function using question 9 of the DLQI and the FSFI. According to question 9 of the DLQI, sexual function was affected in our patients with neurodermatitis. When we looked at the total and individual scores from the FSFI, the total score was significantly decreased in female patients with neurodermatitis compared with that in controls. Analyses of each domain showed that scores for desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction were significantly decreased in these patients. The pain score was also lower in the patient group than in the control group, although the difference was not statistically significant. As observed in Niemeier et al (1997) and Mercan et al (2008), we conclude that neurodermatitis often results in sexual dysfunction. We also conclude that neurodermatitis has effects particularly on the desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction components of sexual function in female patients. J Allergy Clin Immunol. 2000; 105: 782-787 Mit einer Nahrungsmittelallergie leben Factors affecting skin barrier function might influence the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD). Previous reports have suggested higher rates of AD in areas with so-called hard water and among children born in fall or winter. This study looked for a possible synergistic relationship between these two AD risk factors. The researchers analyzed data on nearly 53,000 children from the Danish National Birth Cohort. National data sources were used to gather birth data and information on domestic water hardness, which differs across Danish regions. Physician diagnosis of AD and other characteristics were assessed in parental interviews when the children were 6 and 18 months old. Overall prevalence of AD was 15.0%. Prevalence ranged from 13.5% to 17.1% in regions with the softest versus hardest domestic water; relative prevalence of AD increased by 5% per 5-degree increase in water hardness. Hard water accounted for an estimated 2% of the population risk of AD. Relative prevalence of AD was 24% higher for children born in fall and 18% higher for those born in winter. There was no evidence of interaction between season of birth and water hardness. Both hard domestic water and fall/winter birth are associated with a higher prevalence of AD in early childhood. Risk of AD increases along with degree of water hardness, but there is no synergistic interaction between these two risk factors. Further studies are needed to see if water softening can reduce AD risk in infants. Patient and Visitor Guide International Society Meeting Travel Grant Soumelis V 2. Visually examining the skin. Visit WebMD on Facebook Scopus (131) AAFA Chapters View all learning/CME Neurodermatitis is a chronic, severely pruritic disorder characterized by 1 or more lichenified plaques in which the skin is thickened and there are accentuated skin markings. It affects adults, predominantly from ages 30 to 50 years. Women are affected more commonly than men. It may lead to demoralization, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, and distress through its impact on the patient's well‐being (Burgin, 2008). If the patient suffers from psychologic problems, the lesions are more likely to be persistent (Stander and Metze, 2009). Whether emotional factors are secondary to the primary dermatologic disease or they are primary and causative (altering perception of itch) is unclear. It has been postulated that neurotransmitters that affect mood, such as dopamine, serotonin, and opioid peptides, modulate perception of itch via descending spinal pathways (Burgin, 2008). The aim of treatment is to break this vicious circle between itching, scratching and deterioration in the skin's appearance. Various measures may be helpful in this situation, e.g. cooling, skin-friendly and breathable fabrics, compresses and dressings with black tea, table salt or ointments. b Student's t test. dermatologist Hautarzt READ MORE Skin disorders Use central air conditioning with air filtration Airborne pollens (grasses, weeds, trees, etc.) Cevikbas F, Wang X, Akiyama T, Kempkes C, Savinko T, Antal A, et al. Clinically, lesions appear erythematous or hyperpigmented, lichenified and scaly. High-potency topical steroids are often required to break the cycle. Steroid-impregnated tape, such as flurandrenolide (Cordran), applied at bedtime or after bathing and left in place for up to12 hours, also protects the lesions from being scratched. When symptoms improve, the potency of the steroid and the frequency of use can be reduced. Topical doxepin relieves pruritus and also helps break the cycle, but systemic absorption and drowsiness sometimes limit its use. If applicable, lesions can be covered with dressings, such as an Unna boot, to prevent the patient from scratching. More nodular lesions are termed prurigo nodularis, or picker’s nodules. Your Orders The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to assess sexual function. It is a self‐reported measure of sexual function that has been validated on a clinically diagnosed sample of women with female sexual arousal disorder. The questionnaire is composed of 19 items divided into 6 domains that include desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain. Each item is scored on a scale of 0 (or 1) to 5 (range for items 1, 2, 15, and 16 is 1–5), and each domain is scored with the total of the items (maximum scores 10–20) (Rosen et al, 2000). Higher scores indicate better function, and a domain score of zero indicates no sexual activity during the past month. contact dermatitis | lichen simplex contact dermatitis | scalp dermatitis contact dermatitis | exfoliative dermatitis
