General health questionnaires and dermatology‐specific quality of life scales may have some questions about sexual life, but they do not specifically evaluate sexual problems. Because female and male sexual functions are physiologically different entities, gender‐specific sexual function scales, such as FSFI and International Index of Erectile Function Questionnaire (IIEF) are preferred (Ermertcan, 2009). QoL of most of (32.9%) our patients were moderate affected. The mean DLQI score in our study was 9.34, which was lower than previous report. Ermertcan AT found that DLQI score for patients in Turkey was 11.951. It can be explained by the limitation of patient selection. Patients included in the previous study were female only. In studies evaluating patients with chronic conditions, women consistently report poorer QoL than men7. Women were reported more pain8, more physical and psychological impairments9. Moreover, cases enrolled in the previous study were 43. When QoL affected by a specific entity was discussed, enough sample size will be more representative. Lichenification Other general skin conditions may cause concern when the first, or only, manifestation of the condition occurs on the nipple or areola. Figure 12.10 shows a patient with vitiligo confined to the areola that showed such concern. Br J Dermatol. 2001; 144: 788-794 Wakugawa M Vidal’s disease (syn.: lichen simplex chronicus Vidal, dermatitis lichenoides pruriens Neisser) is clinically manifested by one or more strongly dry itchy plaques, located mainly on the posterolateral surfaces of the neck, in the folds of skin and surrounded by small papular elements and minor pigmentation, mildly turning into normal skin. Sometimes in the areas of scratching depigmentation develops. In the presence of pronounced infiltration and lichenification, hypertrophic warty foci of lesions can occur. Rare variants include depigmented, linear, moniliform, decalvans, psoriasiform neurodermatitis, and Pautrier’s giant lichenification. In the papillary dermal layer and in its upper part focal, predominantly perivascular infiltrates, composed of lymphocytes with an admixture of fibroblasts and also fibrosis, are detected. Sometimes the picture resembles psoriasis. In some cases, there are areas of spongiosis and an intracellular edema that resembles contact dermatitis. Proliferating cells are rather large, in case of the application of usual methods of painting they can be mistakenly determined as atypical ones, observed in the presence of fungal mycosis. In such cases, clinical data help to do a correct diagnosis. David TJ Mayo Clinic does not endorse companies or products. Advertising revenue supports our not-for-profit mission. At times, lesions with overlapping clinical and histopathological features of both lichen simplex chronicus and prurigo nodularis are found. Prurigo nodularis is one condition in which the histological picture often lags behind the clinical appearance. The author has seen numerous cases, regarded by experienced dermatologists as prurigo nodularis, in which the histological picture was that of lichen simplex chronicus. Cool compress: Applying a cool compress or soaking the area for 5 minutes before you apply a corticosteroid can help the medicine penetrate thickened skin more easily — and reduce the itchiness. Scopus (286) Atopic dermatitis is associated with a low-producer transforming growth factor beta(1) cytokine genotype. Regional variations occur in lichen simplex chronicus. Epidermal hyperplasia is usually quite mild in lesions on the lip, while vertical-streaked collagen is unusual in lesions on the scalp or in mucocutaneous regions such as the vulva and perianal area. Niemeier et al (1997) compared sexual behaviors in patients with psoriasis, neurodermatitis, and controls. Patients with skin diseases had a significantly impaired sexual life, compared with healthy controls (Niemeier et al, 1997). Gupta and Gupta (1997) reported that 40.8% of patients with psoriasis expressed that their sexual activity had diminished since the onset of their skin disease. Sampogna et al (2007) investigated the sexual life in patients with psoriasis with 2 dermatology‐specific questionnaires (Skindex‐29 and DLQI) and 2 psoriasis‐specific questionnaires (Psoriasis Disability Index [PDI] and Impact of Psoriasis on Quality of Life Questionnaire [IPSO]). Of 936 patients, 35.5% (PDI) to 71.3% (IPSO) reported sexual problems because of psoriasis. Mercan et al (2008) used the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX) to compare sexual function in 31 patients with neurodermatitis, 24 patients with psoriasis, and 33 control cases. They found that the neurodermatitis group had more sexual problems than the psoriasis group and the control group. Sukan and Maner (2007) used the ASEX to examine sexual problems in 50 patients with vitiligo, 50 patients with chronic urticaria, and 50 healthy controls. The total scores of the ASEX in the female patient groups were significantly higher than those in controls. The score for satisfaction from orgasm in male patients was less than that in controls. In men, differences in other subitem scores of ASEX were not significant between the patient groups and controls. Exacerbate signs and symptoms Lichen simplex chronicus (LSC) (also known as neurodermatitis[1]) is a skin disorder characterized by chronic itching and scratching.[2] The constant scratching causes thick, leathery, darkened, (lichenified) skin. This condition is associated with many factors, including the scratch-itch cycle, psychological stressors, and atopy. LSC is more common between ages 35 and 50 and is seen approximately twice as often in women compared to men.[3] Elazab N, Mendy A, Gasana J, Vieira ER, Quizon A, Forno E.
