Neurodermatitis has so frequently been used to discuss any skin eruption associated with anxiety that it has become less specific as a diagnosis. It was intended to refer to localized circumscribed patches of lichenified skin associated with itching. Without proper knowledge of its etiology or its appearance it can be confused with many other conditions, resulting in poor management. The authors characterize the diagnosis as it was intended and give a capsule description of its appearance, differential diagnosis, prognosis and management.

Neurodermatitis requires focus sanation of chronic bacterial and parasitic infections. Approximately two-thirds of the patients were followed for at least 2 years and the rest were followed for at least 5 years. From ages 2 to 26 years, more than 80% of patients reported having continued symptoms and/or use of topical medications to control symptoms. By age 20, approximately half of the patients had experienced at least one 6-month symptom- and medication-free period. Living in southern states, having a relative with an atopic illness, and exposure to pollen, wool, pets, cigarettes, fumes, some foods or drinks, and soaps/detergents were linked to persistent symptoms. Despite recent advances in the understanding of the genetics of atopic dermatitis (AD), the pathophysiology remains poorly defined. Two main hypotheses have been proposed regarding the development of inflammation that leads to AD. The first suggests a primary immune dysfunction resulting in IgE sensitization, allergic inflammation, and a secondary epithelial barrier disturbance. The second proposes a primary defect in the epithelial barrier leading to secondary immunologic dysregulation and resulting in inflammation.

Also known as benign alveolar ridge keratosis, it is a common lesion that presents as a white papule or plaque on the keratinized gingiva of the maxillary or mandibular alveolar ridge. Gokhan Temeltas Many sufferers experience severe itching. Scratching will temporarily get rid of the itching but it damages the skin, which in turn encourages itching. The aim of treatment is to break this vicious circle between itching, scratching and deterioration in the skin's appearance. Various measures may be helpful in this situation, e.g. cooling, skin-friendly and breathable fabrics, compresses and dressings with black tea, table salt or ointments.

Pain: Some people feel pain. One study found that when neurodermatitis appears on the scalp, it may cause pain, itch, or both. Try over-the-counter medications. Apply an anti-itch cream or lotion to the affected area. A hydrocortisone cream can temporarily relieve the itch. An oral antihistamine, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl, others) can relieve severe itching and help you sleep. Some people have had success with capsaicin (kap-SAY-ih-sin) cream, but it may sting at first.
