Find out what it is and how to treat with our in-depth guide.Neurodermatitis is a condition that tends to affect more women than men, and is more prevalent among those aged 30-50. It is characterised by a persistent itch that can cause a host of related problems.Unfortunately, there’s very little that is known for sure about this skin condition. What causes neurodermatitis? The biggest question around neurodermatitis is its cause. And on that score scientists have no definite answers.Despite a noted prevalence among certain parts of the population, and a link to stress and anxiety, there is no definitive answer to what causes neurodermatitis. Here’s what we do know: neurodermatitis starts as a small patch of itchy skin. The itch can be very intense, and frequent, and it can become so uncomfortable that it disrupts sleep. The repetitive scratching or rubbing of the itchy skin means that the affected area eventually becomes thick and leathery, and may become infected if the skin is broken. While neurodermatitis isn’t contagious, the original site may develop into several itchy spots on the body.So how do you stop something when you don’t know what causes it?Treating neurodermatitisThe current approach to neurodermatitis treatment is targeted towards symptoms.Doctors try to reduce the effects of the condition by administering antihistamines, corticosteroids and other anti-inflammatories. The idea here is to reduce itching so that the skin can heal.In cases where anxiety or stress are suspected as contributing to the condition, anti-anxiety medication is also used. The key here is that neurodermatitis is best treated by a doctor. If you find yourself suffering from constant itching, your best bet is to visit your dermatologist. The impact of neurodermatitis on sexual function is of interest because the disease can limit a person's ability to perform essential life tasks and social roles. Moreover, sexual dysfunction may also cause significant personal distress and negatively impact quality of life (Thaipisuttikul, 1998; Abeck, 2005; Chuh et al, 2006; Burgin, 2008). In our study, we used the DLQI to evaluate the quality of life of patients. The mean DLQI score of 11.95 is similar to the mean scores of 11.20 and 10.53 reported for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, respectively (Basra et al, 2008). The scores on question 9 of the DLQI showed that neurodermatitis affected sexual function in our patients. Consistent with this observation, previous studies have revealed a higher prevalence of sexual dysfunction in patients with chronic pain (Monga et al, 1998; Ambler et al, 2001). Sexual dysfunction in female patients with fibromyalgia has been demonstrated (Tikiz et al, 2005), and sexual status and erectile dysfunction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have been suggested (Koseoglu et al, 2005). Sexual dysfunction studies on other systemic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, chronic liver disease, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, epilepsy, chronic renal failure, and multiple sclerosis have also been performed (Ermertcan, 2009). Recommended Position statements Further, filaggrin mutations are associated with early-onset AD and with airway disease in the setting of AD. [20] One mechanism by which filaggrin defects may influence inflammation is by the release of epithelial cell‒derived cytokines, including TSLP, IL-25, and IL-33, which are all known to be up-regulated in the context of AD. [21, 22, 23, 24] TSLP has been shown to be a potent promoter of basophil and ILC2 responses in the skin, while IL-25 and IL-33 preferentially elicit ILC2s. [12, 13, 16] Although filaggrin is strongly linked to AD, mutations are only found in 30% of European patients, begging the question of whether other genetic variants may also be responsible for some of the findings in the pathogenesis of AD. Indeed, genetic variants of TSLP have been shown to interact with mutations in filaggrin to influence AD disease persistence in patients. JAAD Infectious Disease Skin examination J Invest Dermatol. 1996; 106: 446-453 This study was performed in the dermatology outpatient clinic of the medical faculty of Celal Bayar University, Manisa, Turkey. We enrolled 89 female participants, including 43 patients with neurodermatitis who were consecutively admitted to the dermatology department and 46 healthy, sexually active volunteers as a control group. All participants were married and reported that they had only 1 sexual partner. The study was approved by our institution. All participants volunteered to participate in this study and gave informed consent after the objectives and methods of the study were explained. Managing Ad Latex Allergy Eczema in Children Atopic dermatitis (AD) is associated with colonization and increased risk of infections with Staphylococcus aureus. However, it's unclear how the skin microbiome during infancy affects the incidence of AD. This prospective study evaluated the effects of skin microbiome on the risk of developing AD during the first year of life. The study included 50 randomly selected infants from an Irish birth cohort study. Skin swabs from four sites relevant to AD were collected at 2 days and 2 and 6 months of age, with bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequencing and analysis performed directly from clinical samples. Patterns and changes in bacterial skin colonization were analyzed for association with the incidence of AD at 1 year. The types and diversity of bacteria in the skin microbiome changed significantly between sampling periods. In contrast to patients with established AD, occurrence of infantile AD was not associated with skin dysbiosis or colonization with S. aureus. Development of AD during the first year of life was associated with significant differences in bacterial communities detected in swabs from the antecubital fossa at 2 months. In particular, commensal staphylococci were significantly less abundant in infants who went on to develop AD. The skin microbiome was unrelated to mode of delivery or feeding method. Skin colonization with S. aureus does not appear to occur before the development of AD in infants. Early colonization with commensal staphylococci may have a protective effect against infantile AD. The authors emphasize the need for further research to understand the pathophysiology and mechanisms by which the skin microbiome affects the development of skin immunity and AD. Allergies – simple to explain Itchy eyes Treat anxiety and stress: When neurodermatitis fails to clear with medicine, it can be helpful to think about what’s going on in your life. Do you have tremendous stress in your life? Are you feeling anxious? Both stress and anxiety can trigger the itch — even when you are treating the itch with medicine. References I thank Drs. W.
