Epidemics Authorship Form Skip to Main Content Wisconsin Narrow neurodermatitis is more common in adult males and is characterized by one or more lesions in the form of plaques of various sizes and shapes on the skin of neck, reproductive organs (anogenital area), elbow and popliteal creases. Plaques are symmetrically arranged delimitating relatively clearly from unaffected skin by the area of hyperpigmentation. In focus areas skin is dry, infiltrated, with an exaggerated picture, more pronounced in the center. On the periphery of foci small (pinhead) polygonal flat papules with a glossy surface of a brownish-red or pink color are located. Scratching will temporarily get rid of the itching but it damages the skin, which in turn encourages itching. The aim of treatment is to break this vicious circle between itching, scratching and deterioration in the skin's appearance. Various measures may be helpful in this situation, e.g. cooling, skin-friendly and breathable fabrics, compresses and dressings with black tea, table salt or ointments. Wakugawa M Factors affecting skin barrier function might influence the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD). Previous reports have suggested higher rates of AD in areas with so-called hard water and among children born in fall or winter. This study looked for a possible synergistic relationship between these two AD risk factors. The researchers analyzed data on nearly 53,000 children from the Danish National Birth Cohort. National data sources were used to gather birth data and information on domestic water hardness, which differs across Danish regions. Physician diagnosis of AD and other characteristics were assessed in parental interviews when the children were 6 and 18 months old. Overall prevalence of AD was 15.0%. Prevalence ranged from 13.5% to 17.1% in regions with the softest versus hardest domestic water; relative prevalence of AD increased by 5% per 5-degree increase in water hardness. Hard water accounted for an estimated 2% of the population risk of AD. Relative prevalence of AD was 24% higher for children born in fall and 18% higher for those born in winter. There was no evidence of interaction between season of birth and water hardness. Both hard domestic water and fall/winter birth are associated with a higher prevalence of AD in early childhood. Risk of AD increases along with degree of water hardness, but there is no synergistic interaction between these two risk factors. Further studies are needed to see if water softening can reduce AD risk in infants. Neurodermatitis rarely goes away without treatment. The diagnosis of lichen simplex chronicus is usually obvious in patients who have a localized itching plaque of chronic dermatitis. Chronic contact dermatitis should be considered from a topical medicine used to treat the symptoms. Several more serious “psychodermatoses” are habitual (neurotic) excoriations, factitious dermatitis, and delusions of parasitosis. Sometimes neurodermatitis begins with something that simply rubs or irritates the skin, such as tight clothing or a bug bite. As you rub or scratch the area, it gets itchier. Immune disorders lead to polyvalent sensitization that is a basis of an underlying atopy (unco disease), which refers to the increased sensitivity of an organism to various stimuli. Therefore, these patients are often observed with the combination of neurodermatitis and other atopic, mainly respiratory, diseases, such as vasomotor rhinitis, bronchial asthma, hay fever, migraine and others.
