What are the symptoms of latent syphilis? Scopus (168) One of the most serious complications, which can accompany neurodermatitis, is Kaposi's varicelliform eruption, due to which lethality ranges from 1.6 to 30% among children. The causative agent is the herpes simplex virus, especially of type 1, which causes damage to the upper respiratory tract and skin around the nose and mouth. Virus of the type 2 is less common, it affects mucous membranes and skin of genital organs. The disease begins acutely in 5-7 days after the contact with an ill person with herpes simplex and is manifested by chills, body temperature up to 40°C, weakness, adynamics, prostration. After 1-3 days rashes of small, to the size of a pinhead, bubbles, filled with serous, less commonly with hemorrhagic content appear. Later bubbles turn into pustules and acquire a typical appearance from navel like impression in the center. In the evolution of the elements bleeding erosions are formed, their surface is covered with hemorrhagic crusts. Patient's face acquires "mask-like" appearance. The lesion of mucous membranes proceeds as aphthous stomatitis, conjunctivitis, and keratoconjunctivitis. Living Well What to Read Next on Medscape ABSTRACT: Neurodermatitis is a chronic disease affecting the patient's psychosocial status and quality of life. It is associated with a variety of psychologic problems, including demoralization, depression, anxiety, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, and sleep disturbances. Coexistence of sexual dysfunction, especially in women, with several systemic diseases has gained interest in recent years. In this study, we evaluated sexual function in female patients with neurodermatitis. We enrolled 89 women (43 patients, 46 controls) in the study. Quality of life was assessed with the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to determine sexual function. Individuals with psychiatric disorders and/or those using antidepressants were excluded. The total DLQI score was 11.95 ± 5.65 in patients with neurodermatitis. The total FSFI score was significantly lower in patients compared with healthy controls (22.76 ± 5.31 and 28.83 ± 3.50, respectively; P = .001). Domain scores of FSFI (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction) except pain were significantly lower in patients with neurodermatitis (P = .001). The pain score was also lower in patients than controls, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = .073). Neurodermatitis may be associated with sexual dysfunction, and patients with neurodermatitis should be evaluated with regard to sexual function to provide a better quality of life. For example, chronic stress, major depression, schizophrenia, or anorexia nervosa seem to be associated with a hyperactive HPA axis, whereas a hyporeactive HPA axis is found more often in CFS, autoimmune processes, or PTSD. Since there are only few longitudinal data available to date on the relationship between HPA activity and stress-related disorders, the question of cause and effect remains to be answered in future research.
