Plaques are symmetrically arranged delimitating relatively clearly from unaffected skin by the area of hyperpigmentation. In focus areas skin is dry, infiltrated, with an exaggerated picture, more pronounced in the center. On the periphery of foci small (pinhead) polygonal flat papules with a glossy surface of a brownish-red or pink color are located. A randomized controlled trial by Armstrong et al demonstrated improved patient education and clinical outcome in patients who watched a video on atopic dermatitis (AD) compared with those who received a pamphlet. [33] The study emphasized the importance of lifestyle changes and daily care in the successful treatment of AD. Ending Sexual Harassment in Academic Medicine  V.J. Dzau et al. Scratching leads to redness, swelling, cracking, "weeping" clear fluid, crusting, and scaling. In most cases, there are periods of time when the disease is worse (called exacerbations or flares) followed by periods when the skin improves or clears up entirely (called remissions)....Read more about Atopic Dermatitis English for PTA Our Partners AD may be associated with other atopic (immunoglobulin E [IgE]–associated) diseases (eg, acute allergic reaction to foods, asthma, urticaria, and allergic rhinitis). [8] AD has enormous morbidity, and the incidence and prevalence appear to be increasing. Further, AD is the first disease to present in a series of allergic diseases such as food allergy, asthma, and allergic rhinitis (in order), provoking the “atopic march” theory, which suggests that early or severe AD and cutaneous sensitization to environmental allergens may lead to subsequent allergic disease at other epithelial barrier surfaces (eg, gastrointestinal or respiratory tract). This hypothesis is supported by cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. [1] Diversity Mentorship Program Table 1. . All lesions in the patients were localized on their backs, where neurodermatitis lesions are commonly seen. We wanted to eliminate the localization factor from sexual function and evaluate the impacts of this skin disease alone on sexual function. Therefore, patients with anogenital localization were excluded from this study. Routine blood count, biochemistry, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and urinalysis were performed for each participant. The functional integrity of the hypothalamo‐pituitary‐gonadal axis was examined in all participants by measuring the levels of follicle‐stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, estradiol, free testosterone, prolactin, and sex hormone–binding globulin. Participants suffering from pulmonary, hepatic, hematologic, renal, and endocrine diseases such as diabetes mellitus, as well as thyroid function disorders and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, were excluded from the study. Other exclusion criteria included pregnancy and gynecologic and systemic disorders that might affect female sexual function such as hormonal, muscular, neurologic, or cardiovascular diseases and psychologic disorders. Participants on antidepressants and other drugs that are known to interfere with sexual function and postmenopausal women receiving oral or vaginal estrogen therapy for the prevention of climacteric symptoms or vaginal dryness were also excluded from the study.
