It is associated with a variety of psychologic problems, including demoralization, depression, anxiety, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, and sleep disturbances. Coexistence of sexual dysfunction, especially in women, with several systemic diseases has gained interest in recent years. In this study, we evaluated sexual function in female patients with neurodermatitis. We enrolled 89 women (43 patients, 46 controls) in the study. Quality of life was assessed with the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to determine sexual function. Individuals with psychiatric disorders and/or those using antidepressants were excluded. The total DLQI score was 11.95 ± 5.65 in patients with neurodermatitis. The total FSFI score was significantly lower in patients compared with healthy controls (22.76 ± 5.31 and 28.83 ± 3.50, respectively; P = .001). Domain scores of FSFI (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction) except pain were significantly lower in patients with neurodermatitis (P = .001). The pain score was also lower in patients than controls, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = .073). Neurodermatitis may be associated with sexual dysfunction, and patients with neurodermatitis should be evaluated with regard to sexual function to provide a better quality of life. The Lancet Neurology Disclosure: Nothing to disclose. Female sexual dysfunction has recently become a common and important health concern that is influenced by medical and psychosocial factors (Cayan et al, 2004; Laumann et al, 2005; Bachmann, 2006; Hayes et al, 2006; Segraves and Woodard, 2006). In contrast to basic and clinical research in the field of male sexual dysfunction, the sexual problems of women have received relatively little attention and often remain untreated (Anastasiadis et al, 2002). If the neurodermatitis develops on the scalp, the scratching and/or rubbing can cause hair loss. If the repeated scratching leads to an open sore that bleeds, there is an increased risk of infection and scarring. Signs of infection include honey-colored crusts and fluid leaking from the area. You may also see pus-filled bumps. [61] Emerging clinical trials data indicate that blocking this pathway may be a key mechanism by which atopic itch can be treated clinically. Additionally, a 2017 study identified that neuronal, rather than immune, signaling of the type 2 cytokines IL-4 and IL-13 critically regulate AD-associated itch. [62] Indeed, the dual IL-4 and IL-13 blocker, dupilumab, has emerged as a highly effective treatment for AD, which received FDA approval in March of 2017. Thus, blocking cytokine-nerve interactions with targeted biologic therapies has emerged as a novel therapeutic strategy in AD.
