The disease is characterized by lichenificated plaque as a result of excessive scratching. Neck, elbow, ankles, vulva, eyelid even faces are the most common affected sites. Although neurodermatitis is not life-threatening, it can produce an important psychosocial burden. It has been suggested that patients with neurodermatitis suffer from depression, anxiety and other treatable psychological disorders2. Negative emotional states are the main personality component of patients (greater tendency to pain avoidance, greater dependency on other peoples' desires, and more conforming and dutiful)3. Patients with neurodermatitis tend to have poor social skills or interpersonal resources and a lack of flexibility. Neurodermatitis may be associated with sleep disturbance and sexual dysfunction4. All these data constitute a growing body of evidence indicating a negative impact of neurodermatitis on patients' quality of life (QoL). aha!shop: other booklets and factsheets provides detailed information and are available in German, French, Italian Review ArticleMechanisms of DiseaseFree Preview scratching Kratzen Diseases of Pigment Find a Doctor Ankles Visit Our Schools close Follow us | Our Spring Allergy Capitals report is an independent research project of AAFA. WebMD Health Record Allergy Treatment Factors affecting skin barrier function might influence the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD). Previous reports have suggested higher rates of AD in areas with so-called hard water and among children born in fall or winter. This study looked for a possible synergistic relationship between these two AD risk factors. The researchers analyzed data on nearly 53,000 children from the Danish National Birth Cohort. National data sources were used to gather birth data and information on domestic water hardness, which differs across Danish regions. Physician diagnosis of AD and other characteristics were assessed in parental interviews when the children were 6 and 18 months old. Overall prevalence of AD was 15.0%. Prevalence ranged from 13.5% to 17.1% in regions with the softest versus hardest domestic water; relative prevalence of AD increased by 5% per 5-degree increase in water hardness. Hard water accounted for an estimated 2% of the population risk of AD. Relative prevalence of AD was 24% higher for children born in fall and 18% higher for those born in winter. There was no evidence of interaction between season of birth and water hardness. Both hard domestic water and fall/winter birth are associated with a higher prevalence of AD in early childhood. Risk of AD increases along with degree of water hardness, but there is no synergistic interaction between these two risk factors. Further studies are needed to see if water softening can reduce AD risk in infants. Scopus (150) Diseases of the Eye ALERT Scopus (44) ABSTRACT: Neurodermatitis is a chronic disease affecting the patient's psychosocial status and quality of life. It is associated with a variety of psychologic problems, including demoralization, depression, anxiety, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, and sleep disturbances. Coexistence of sexual dysfunction, especially in women, with several systemic diseases has gained interest in recent years. In this study, we evaluated sexual function in female patients with neurodermatitis. We enrolled 89 women (43 patients, 46 controls) in the study. Quality of life was assessed with the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to determine sexual function. Individuals with psychiatric disorders and/or those using antidepressants were excluded. The total DLQI score was 11.95 ± 5.65 in patients with neurodermatitis. The total FSFI score was significantly lower in patients compared with healthy controls (22.76 ± 5.31 and 28.83 ± 3.50, respectively; P = .001). Domain scores of FSFI (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction) except pain were significantly lower in patients with neurodermatitis (P = .001). The pain score was also lower in patients than controls, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = .073). Neurodermatitis may be associated with sexual dysfunction, and patients with neurodermatitis should be evaluated with regard to sexual function to provide a better quality of life. In contrast to basic and clinical research in the field of male sexual dysfunction, the sexual problems of women have received relatively little attention and often remain untreated (Anastasiadis et al, 2002). In the skin of patients decrease in number of Langerhans cells and reduction of HLA-DR antigen expression on them, increase of the number of Langerhans cells with IgE-receptors are detected. From the immune disorders elevated levels of serum IgE are observed that is believed to be genetically determined, although this sign is not observed in all patients with neurodermatitis; the lack of T-lymphocytes, especially having suppressor properties, is caused probably by defective beta-adrenergic receptors. The number of B-cells is normal, but there is a slight increase in the number of B-lymphocytes, bearing receptors for Fc-fragment of IgE. Neutrophilic chemotaxis, a function of natural killer cells, production of interleukin-1 by monocytes of patients in comparison with control observations are reduced. The presence of immune system defect serves apparently as one of the major causes of patients’ susceptibility to infectious diseases. Pathogenetic importance of non-bacterial allergy on allergens of an infectious origin is shown. Neurovegetative disturbances are given with both etiological and aggravating significances in the course of the disease.
