Many hypothesize LSC has a psychosomatic origin.[3] Those predisposed to itch as a response to emotional tensions may be more susceptible to the itch-scratch cycle. It may also be associated with nervousness, anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders.[5][6] Many people with LSC are aware of the scratching they do during the day, but they might not be aware of the scratching they do in their sleep.[2] LSC is also associated with atopy, or atopic dermatitis (eczema).[2] Mayo Clinic Voice Apps Disclosures: Dr Dinakar reports serving as a consultant/advisor to Aerocrine, Aimmune, Boeheringer Ingelheim, Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, and Teva. Two premature babies and one child with multiple anomalies died; one newborn had a unilateral cystic kidney without urine production. In a retrospective analysis of 100 pregnancies with 68 live-born children, there were four with different malformations (Kainz 2000). Retrospective cases report premature twins of 32 weeks’ gestation. Both suffered from cardiomyopathy, of which one of them died (Vyas 1999). Among nine tacrolimus-exposed pregnancies, there were two with a small ventricular septal defect (Nagy 2003). An otherwise healthy premature baby who was exposed in utero to tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil demonstrated hypoplastic fingernails and short fifth fingers on both hands (Pergola 2001). There are rare case reports on the use of tacrolimus during pregnancy for other indications, such as refractory inflammatory bowel disease (Baumgart 2005). verify here. Georgia Gelfand EW Allergy Research Lyme Disease in Dogs EMAIL THIS Quality Atopic dermatitis is the most common of the many types of eczema, which is a general term for disorders that produce skin inflammation. Although not psoriasiform, mention is made of a recently described entity that clinically resembles lichen simplex chronicus or lichen amyloidosus but which has no histological similarities at all – pretibial pruritic papular dermatitis. The authors of that paper proposed that it was a response to chronic rubbing, possibly with other contributing factors such as xerosis, contact with irritants, and emotional distress. The lesions were red to flesh colored, pruritic papules 3–8 mm in diameter. There was a cobblestone appearance in some later lesions. Lesions were unilateral in 33/44 cases and bilateral in 11/44. The histology showed mild compact orthokeratosis, flattening of the rete ridges, superficial dermal fibrosis, and a mild to moderate superficial and mid-dermal infiltrate of lymphocytes, histiocytes and a few eosinophils. Stellate cells were present, probably a reflection of scratching. The published photomicrographs show some resemblance to pigmented purpuric dermatosis but there was no hemosiderin. Terms to know Related terms: Background: Neurodermatitis is a common chronic skin disease. Although not life-threatening, it can produce an important psychosocial burden, sleep disturbance and sexual dysfunction. Patients with neurodermatitis tend to have poor social skills or interpersonal resources and a lack of flexibility. However quality of life (QoL) of patients with neurodermatitis has seldom investigated. The objective of this study is to assess the impact of neurodermatitis on patients' QoL using the Dermatology Life Quality Index questionnaire, and assess its feasibility and internal consistency.
