According to modern concepts, neurodermatitis is the genetically determined disease with multifactorial inheritance of predisposition to allergic reactions. Importance of genetic factors is confirmed by a high rate of disease among close relatives and monozygotic twins. According to an immunogenetic study, neurodermatitis is significantly associated with HLA B-12 and DR4. Education n(%) Vet Approved What prognosis does neurodermatitis have? The severity of illness for each patient was rated as 1 of 5 stages: 0, no evidence of clinical disease; I, limited disease; II, mild disease; III, moderate disease; and IV, severe disease. DIDS was applied as the measuring tool to determine the disease severity. Tacrolimus is a macrolide obtained from Streptomyces, and is widely used as an immunosuppressant in transplant medicine. Skin diseases such as neurodermatitis are another indication; this will be discussed elsewhere (see Chapter 2.17). Certain advantages and disadvantages of tacrolimus in pregnancy are discussed compared to cyclosporine: rejection and hypertension are less common with tacrolimus, and the necessary dosage of prednisolone is lower. On the other hand, gestational diabetes occurs more often, as does transient hyperkalemia and transient reduction of kidney function in the newborn. Jain (1997) even reported on a newborn with anuria which lasted 36 hours. As with other immunosuppressant drugs, pre-eclampsia, prematurity, low birth weight, and cesarian births were seen at greater incidence. MyDermPath+ Medically reviewed on September 29, 2017 Another cause of Kaposi varicelliform eruption is vaccination with vaccinia for the prevention of small pox, but because this is no longer mandatory, patients with AD do not develop the sequelae of eczema vaccinatum that has been seen in the past. It was usually contracted by the patient from the vaccination of themselves or their close relatives. This condition had a high mortality rate (up to 25%). In the current climate of threats of bioterrorism, vaccination may once again become necessary, and physicians should be aware of eczema vaccinatum in this setting. Factors affecting skin barrier function might influence the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD). Previous reports have suggested higher rates of AD in areas with so-called hard water and among children born in fall or winter. This study looked for a possible synergistic relationship between these two AD risk factors. The researchers analyzed data on nearly 53,000 children from the Danish National Birth Cohort. National data sources were used to gather birth data and information on domestic water hardness, which differs across Danish regions. Physician diagnosis of AD and other characteristics were assessed in parental interviews when the children were 6 and 18 months old. Overall prevalence of AD was 15.0%. Prevalence ranged from 13.5% to 17.1% in regions with the softest versus hardest domestic water; relative prevalence of AD increased by 5% per 5-degree increase in water hardness. Hard water accounted for an estimated 2% of the population risk of AD. Relative prevalence of AD was 24% higher for children born in fall and 18% higher for those born in winter. There was no evidence of interaction between season of birth and water hardness. Both hard domestic water and fall/winter birth are associated with a higher prevalence of AD in early childhood. Risk of AD increases along with degree of water hardness, but there is no synergistic interaction between these two risk factors. Further studies are needed to see if water softening can reduce AD risk in infants. Your password has been changed Legal notice Here's some information to help you get ready for your appointment. Plaques are symmetrically arranged delimitating relatively clearly from unaffected skin by the area of hyperpigmentation. In focus areas skin is dry, infiltrated, with an exaggerated picture, more pronounced in the center. On the periphery of foci small (pinhead) polygonal flat papules with a glossy surface of a brownish-red or pink color are located.
