It is believed that the consequence of cAMP decreased level can be an increased release of inflammatory mediators from leukocytes, including histamine, which causes decrease in the functional activity of T-lymphocytes via H2-receptor. This may explain IgE hyperproduction. The association with certain antibodies of tissue histocompatibility (HLA-A1, A9, B12, D24, DR1, DR7 and others) is found. According to the data of P. M. Alyeva (1993) DR5 antigen is a risk factor of disease development, and DR4 and DRw6 antigens are resistance factors. Most authors consider Vidal’s disease and disseminated neurodermatitis as an independent disease, but in patients with Vidal’s disease, the detection of immune phenomena, which are peculiar to atopic dermatitis, difference absence in the distribution of histocompatibility antigens in patients with the various prevalence of the process, the similarity in the disturbance of the metabolism of biogenic amines allow to consider disseminated neurodermatitis and Vidal’s disease as manifestations of one disease. Nonmedical measures that may be helpful include the following: Lichen simplex chronicus (also called “neurodermatitis”) is a chronic eczematous eruption of the skin that is the result of scratching (Fig. 8.13). Pruritus precedes the scratching and may be precipitated by frustration, depression, and stress. The scratching then causes the lichenification and further itching, resulting in an “itch–scratch–itch” cycle that perpetuates the process. In dermatology, the study of this subject is quite new. Niemeier et al (1997) compared sexual behaviors in patients with psoriasis, neurodermatitis, and controls. Patients with skin diseases had a significantly impaired sexual life, compared with healthy controls (Niemeier et al, 1997). Gupta and Gupta (1997) reported that 40.8% of patients with psoriasis expressed that their sexual activity had diminished since the onset of their skin disease. Sampogna et al (2007) investigated the sexual life in patients with psoriasis with 2 dermatology‐specific questionnaires (Skindex‐29 and DLQI) and 2 psoriasis‐specific questionnaires (Psoriasis Disability Index [PDI] and Impact of Psoriasis on Quality of Life Questionnaire [IPSO]). Of 936 patients, 35.5% (PDI) to 71.3% (IPSO) reported sexual problems because of psoriasis. Mercan et al (2008) used the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX) to compare sexual function in 31 patients with neurodermatitis, 24 patients with psoriasis, and 33 control cases. They found that the neurodermatitis group had more sexual problems than the psoriasis group and the control group. Sukan and Maner (2007) used the ASEX to examine sexual problems in 50 patients with vitiligo, 50 patients with chronic urticaria, and 50 healthy controls. The total scores of the ASEX in the female patient groups were significantly higher than those in controls. The score for satisfaction from orgasm in male patients was less than that in controls. In men, differences in other subitem scores of ASEX were not significant between the patient groups and controls. Michigan What happens in atopic dermatitis? Find out what it is and how to treat with our in-depth guide.Neurodermatitis is a condition that tends to affect more women than men, and is more prevalent among those aged 30-50. It is characterised by a persistent itch that can cause a host of related problems.Unfortunately, there’s very little that is known for sure about this skin condition. What causes neurodermatitis? The biggest question around neurodermatitis is its cause. And on that score scientists have no definite answers.Despite a noted prevalence among certain parts of the population, and a link to stress and anxiety, there is no definitive answer to what causes neurodermatitis. Here’s what we do know: neurodermatitis starts as a small patch of itchy skin. The itch can be very intense, and frequent, and it can become so uncomfortable that it disrupts sleep. The repetitive scratching or rubbing of the itchy skin means that the affected area eventually becomes thick and leathery, and may become infected if the skin is broken. While neurodermatitis isn’t contagious, the original site may develop into several itchy spots on the body.So how do you stop something when you don’t know what causes it?Treating neurodermatitisThe current approach to neurodermatitis treatment is targeted towards symptoms.Doctors try to reduce the effects of the condition by administering antihistamines, corticosteroids and other anti-inflammatories. The idea here is to reduce itching so that the skin can heal.In cases where anxiety or stress are suspected as contributing to the condition, anti-anxiety medication is also used. The key here is that neurodermatitis is best treated by a doctor. If you find yourself suffering from constant itching, your best bet is to visit your dermatologist.
