Women's Health Treatment is aimed at reducing itching and minimizing existing lesions because rubbing and scratching exacerbate LSC. The itching and inflammation may be treated with a lotions or steroid cream (such as triamcinolone or Betamethasone) applied to the affected area of the skin. Nighttime scratching can be reduced with sedatives and antihistamines. SSRIs can effectively reduce the scratching associated with obsessive psychosomatic behaviors.

Slideshows Special Issues Eczema is a skin condition characterised by an itchy, red rash, which affects 5% to 20% of people worldwide. There is no cure, but many treatments can help improve the skin's condition, making life easier. In those for whom these treatments do not work well or who fear their long‐term effects, there is often a belief that either something in their diet, or something missing in their diet, is making their eczema worse.

Ohman S Oregon Although not psoriasiform, mention is made of a recently described entity that clinically resembles lichen simplex chronicus or lichen amyloidosus but which has no histological similarities at all – pretibial pruritic papular dermatitis. The authors of that paper proposed that it was a response to chronic rubbing, possibly with other contributing factors such as xerosis, contact with irritants, and emotional distress. The lesions were red to flesh colored, pruritic papules 3–8 mm in diameter. There was a cobblestone appearance in some later lesions. Lesions were unilateral in 33/44 cases and bilateral in 11/44. The histology showed mild compact orthokeratosis, flattening of the rete ridges, superficial dermal fibrosis, and a mild to moderate superficial and mid-dermal infiltrate of lymphocytes, histiocytes and a few eosinophils. Stellate cells were present, probably a reflection of scratching. The published photomicrographs show some resemblance to pigmented purpuric dermatosis but there was no hemosiderin.

Thestrup-Pedersen K Characteristics Neurodermatitis Psoriasis vulgaris Significance Many hypothesize LSC has a psychosomatic origin. Those predisposed to itch as a response to emotional tensions may be more susceptible to the itch-scratch cycle. It may also be associated with nervousness, anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders. Many people with LSC are aware of the scratching they do during the day, but they might not be aware of the scratching they do in their sleep. LSC is also associated with atopy, or atopic dermatitis (eczema).
