Stay in Touch Lichen Simplex Chronicus – Neurodermatitis That itching feeling that is normal for dry patches of skin may have no effect on some people and a chronic effect on others. The incidence of neurodermatitis, which is also known as atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema, and of psoriasis have increased in the last ten to fifteen years. Neurodermatitis is characterized by chronic itching or scaling of the skin. It starts with a patch of itchy skin, which leads to scratching. Scratching makes the affected area even itchier and the sufferer scratches a little more until he or she scratches out of habit. Chronic itching and scratching can cause the affected area to become thick and leathery. It is therefore essential to break this itch-scratch cycle. Add us Dialogues in Dermatology In conclusion, neurodermatits moderately affected the QoL of the patients. People should pay more attention to the chronic disease, although it is not life-threatening. There are two limitations in this study: we were unable to compare QoL of patients before and after treatment, which could be incorporated in the planning of future studies. Another comment is related to the questionnaire itself, part of patients worried about the impact of diet on disease which does not exist in DLQI because of the different culture background. The skin then becomes very dry and has reduced protective abilities. This makes your skin more likely to become infected by bacteria or viruses. Stewart D More About Neurodermatitis Password: Harbeck RJ The term ‘prurigo nodularis’ (see p. 670) is used for lesions with a nodular clinical appearance and prominent epidermal hyperplasia of pseudoepitheliomatous rather than psoriasiform type. At times, lesions with overlapping clinical and histopathological features of both lichen simplex chronicus and prurigo nodularis are found. Prurigo nodularis is one condition in which the histological picture often lags behind the clinical appearance. The author has seen numerous cases, regarded by experienced dermatologists as prurigo nodularis, in which the histological picture was that of lichen simplex chronicus. Kaposi varicelliform eruption (eczema herpeticum) is a well-recognized complication of AD. It usually occurs with a primary herpes simplex infection, but it may also be seen with recurrent infection. Vesicular lesions usually begin in areas of eczema and spread rapidly to involve all eczematous areas and healthy skin. Lesions may become secondarily infected. Timely treatment with acyclovir ensures a relative lack of severe morbidity or mortality. This condition is associated with many factors, including the scratch-itch cycle, psychological stressors, and atopy. LSC is more common between ages 35 and 50 and is seen approximately twice as often in women compared to men.[3] Site Feedback Atopic Dermatitis Dermatitis Atópica en Niños Trumble AE Epinephrine in Schools AAFA's Certification Program Efficacy and safety of tacrolimus ointment compared with that of hydrocortisone acetate ointment in children with atopic dermatitis. Eczema is a term for several different types of skin swelling. Eczema is also called dermatitis. Most types cause dry, itchy skin and rashes on the face, inside the elbows and behind the knees, and on the hands and feet. Scratching the skin can cause it to turn red, and to swell and itch even more. Forgot your password? Which is okay, but bathing may be aggravating your condition. Patients with atopic dermatitis need safe and effective long-term treatments. Previous studies have suggested benefits with dupilumab: a human monoclonal antibody against interleukin (IL)-4 receptor alpha that inhibits signaling of the type 2 cytokines IL-4 and IL-13. Two randomized, placebo-controlled trials of dupilumab for AD are reported. The SOLO 1 and 2 trials included 671 and 708 patients, respectively, with moderate to severe AD that was inadequately controlled by topical medications. Patients were assigned to 16 weeks of treatment with dupilumab, 300 mg given weekly or alternating with placebo every other week; or placebo given weekly. The primary outcome was a score of 0 or 1 on the Investigator's Global Assessment, indicating clear or almost clear of AD; plus at least a 2-point reduction in the same score from baseline to 16 weeks. The primary outcome was achieved in 37% of patients receiving weekly dupilumab and 38% with dupilumab every other week, compared to 10% with weekly placebo. Results were similar across the two trials. The dupilumab groups were also more likely to achieve at least 75% improvement in the Eczema Area and Severity Index. Other key outcomes were also improved with dupilumab, including pruritus, anxiety and depression symptoms, and quality of life. The main adverse effects of dupilumab were injection site reactions and conjunctivitis. The SOLO 1 and 2 results show significant improvement in AD signs and symptoms with dupilumab over 16 weeks. The benefits appear similar with treatment given weekly or every other week, compared to placebo. Further studies are needed to establish dupilumab's longterm safety and effectiveness. Severe itching is a prominent feature of neurodermatitis, however psoriasis patients suffer from intensive itching are rarely concerned. Consistent with our finding, Szepietowski JC found that itching was found in 80% of psoriatic patients recently11. The presence and intensity of itching did not depend on age, gender, type of psoriasis, and duration of disease.
