Find out what it is and how to treat with our in-depth guide.Neurodermatitis is a condition that tends to affect more women than men, and is more prevalent among those aged 30-50. It is characterised by a persistent itch that can cause a host of related problems.Unfortunately, there’s very little that is known for sure about this skin condition. What causes neurodermatitis? The biggest question around neurodermatitis is its cause. And on that score scientists have no definite answers.Despite a noted prevalence among certain parts of the population, and a link to stress and anxiety, there is no definitive answer to what causes neurodermatitis. Here’s what we do know: neurodermatitis starts as a small patch of itchy skin. The itch can be very intense, and frequent, and it can become so uncomfortable that it disrupts sleep. The repetitive scratching or rubbing of the itchy skin means that the affected area eventually becomes thick and leathery, and may become infected if the skin is broken. While neurodermatitis isn’t contagious, the original site may develop into several itchy spots on the body.So how do you stop something when you don’t know what causes it?Treating neurodermatitisThe current approach to neurodermatitis treatment is targeted towards symptoms.Doctors try to reduce the effects of the condition by administering antihistamines, corticosteroids and other anti-inflammatories. The idea here is to reduce itching so that the skin can heal.In cases where anxiety or stress are suspected as contributing to the condition, anti-anxiety medication is also used. The key here is that neurodermatitis is best treated by a doctor. If you find yourself suffering from constant itching, your best bet is to visit your dermatologist. In a longitudinal study of 7157 children and adolescents with AD from the Pediatric Eczema Elective Registry, researchers found that symptoms of mild to moderate AD are likely to persist into the teen years or beyond. In contrast to basic and clinical research in the field of male sexual dysfunction, the sexual problems of women have received relatively little attention and often remain untreated (Anastasiadis et al, 2002). One patient with neurodermatitis answered 3 questions and 1 patient with psoriasis vulgaris answered 2 questions. One patient with psoriasis did not list the age and 2 did not specify the gender. Table Table11 shows the demographic characteristics of both groups. Mean ages were 37.97 ± 14.45 (range 18-83, median 35) and 34.33 ± 13.84 (range 16-80, median 32) years for patients with neurodermatitis and psoriasis, respectively. The disease duration ranged from 0.03 to 480 months (mean 32.27, median 12) for patients with neurodermatitis, while the counterpart ranged from 0.5 to 552 months (mean 75.64, median 36). The two groups were matched for gender and age. The disease groups differed significantly in employment status, educational level, address, duration and age. Patients with neurodermatitis experienced high level of education and short disease duration. AD may be associated with other atopic (immunoglobulin E [IgE]–associated) diseases (eg, acute allergic reaction to foods, asthma, urticaria, and allergic rhinitis). [8] AD has enormous morbidity, and the incidence and prevalence appear to be increasing. Further, AD is the first disease to present in a series of allergic diseases such as food allergy, asthma, and allergic rhinitis (in order), provoking the “atopic march” theory, which suggests that early or severe AD and cutaneous sensitization to environmental allergens may lead to subsequent allergic disease at other epithelial barrier surfaces (eg, gastrointestinal or respiratory tract). This hypothesis is supported by cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. [1] Previous Products & Services Soumelis V, Reche PA, Kanzler H, Yuan W, Edward G, Homey B, et al.
