Coexistence of sexual dysfunction, especially female sexual dysfunction, with different diseases has gained interest in recent years (Cayan et al, 2004; Laumann et al, 2005; Bachmann, 2006; Hayes et al, 2006; Segraves and Woodard, 2006). Numerous studies have been performed in other disciplines of medicine about sexual dysfunction (Monga et al, 1998; Ambler et al, 2001; Koseoglu et al, 2005; Tikiz et al, 2005). Wine and Sidney Steinberg Delusions of parasitosis occur in disturbed or anxious eccentric individuals. This disorder begins as intractable pruritus with a crawling sensation in the skin. The patients are convinced that they are harboring parasites and usually bring “specimens” to prove infestation. These bits of material or skin must be examined to rule out a true infestation and to assure the patient of your interest in the problem. More than half of these patients have no visible skin lesions. Those with active lesions have excoriated, crusted papules secondary to picking. Illicit drug addiction should also be ruled out. Kansas Behrendt H ABSTRACT: Neurodermatitis is a chronic disease affecting the patient's psychosocial status and quality of life. It is associated with a variety of psychologic problems, including demoralization, depression, anxiety, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, and sleep disturbances. Coexistence of sexual dysfunction, especially in women, with several systemic diseases has gained interest in recent years. In this study, we evaluated sexual function in female patients with neurodermatitis. We enrolled 89 women (43 patients, 46 controls) in the study. Quality of life was assessed with the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to determine sexual function. Individuals with psychiatric disorders and/or those using antidepressants were excluded. The total DLQI score was 11.95 ± 5.65 in patients with neurodermatitis. The total FSFI score was significantly lower in patients compared with healthy controls (22.76 ± 5.31 and 28.83 ± 3.50, respectively; P = .001). Domain scores of FSFI (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction) except pain were significantly lower in patients with neurodermatitis (P = .001). The pain score was also lower in patients than controls, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = .073). Neurodermatitis may be associated with sexual dysfunction, and patients with neurodermatitis should be evaluated with regard to sexual function to provide a better quality of life. IgE receptors. 3. This story begins with a 60-year-old woman who saw a dermatologist because she had an intensely itchy patch on her scalp. At times, her scalp itched so severely that she scratched the area until it bled. After 2 years of scratching, the itchy patch on her scalp was completely bald. World Congress of Dermatology Louisiana Psychotherapy, so you can talk about stress or anxiety and find ways to manage these effectively Search Drugs.com The woman followed this treatment plan. In three months, all of her symptoms were gone and her hair had regrown. In the third month, she stopped taking the anti-anxiety medicine. At the 6-month follow-up with her dermatologist, she had no signs or symptoms of neurodermatitis. Other general skin conditions may cause concern when the first, or only, manifestation of the condition occurs on the nipple or areola. Figure 12.10 shows a patient with vitiligo confined to the areola that showed such concern. Chronic contact dermatitis should be considered from a topical medicine used to treat the symptoms. Several more serious “psychodermatoses” are habitual (neurotic) excoriations, factitious dermatitis, and delusions of parasitosis. Dr Aylin Türel Ermertcan Preparing for your appointment Kim BS. Blog Opportunities The impact of neurodermatitis on sexual function is of interest because the disease can limit a person's ability to perform essential life tasks and social roles. Moreover, sexual dysfunction may also cause significant personal distress and negatively impact quality of life (Thaipisuttikul, 1998; Abeck, 2005; Chuh et al, 2006; Burgin, 2008). In our study, we used the DLQI to evaluate the quality of life of patients. The mean DLQI score of 11.95 is similar to the mean scores of 11.20 and 10.53 reported for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, respectively (Basra et al, 2008). The scores on question 9 of the DLQI showed that neurodermatitis affected sexual function in our patients. Consistent with this observation, previous studies have revealed a higher prevalence of sexual dysfunction in patients with chronic pain (Monga et al, 1998; Ambler et al, 2001). Sexual dysfunction in female patients with fibromyalgia has been demonstrated (Tikiz et al, 2005), and sexual status and erectile dysfunction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have been suggested (Koseoglu et al, 2005). Sexual dysfunction studies on other systemic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, chronic liver disease, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, epilepsy, chronic renal failure, and multiple sclerosis have also been performed (Ermertcan, 2009).
