Find out what it is and how to treat with our in-depth guide.Neurodermatitis is a condition that tends to affect more women than men, and is more prevalent among those aged 30-50. It is characterised by a persistent itch that can cause a host of related problems.Unfortunately, there’s very little that is known for sure about this skin condition. What causes neurodermatitis? The biggest question around neurodermatitis is its cause. And on that score scientists have no definite answers.Despite a noted prevalence among certain parts of the population, and a link to stress and anxiety, there is no definitive answer to what causes neurodermatitis. Here’s what we do know: neurodermatitis starts as a small patch of itchy skin. The itch can be very intense, and frequent, and it can become so uncomfortable that it disrupts sleep. The repetitive scratching or rubbing of the itchy skin means that the affected area eventually becomes thick and leathery, and may become infected if the skin is broken. While neurodermatitis isn’t contagious, the original site may develop into several itchy spots on the body.So how do you stop something when you don’t know what causes it?Treating neurodermatitisThe current approach to neurodermatitis treatment is targeted towards symptoms.Doctors try to reduce the effects of the condition by administering antihistamines, corticosteroids and other anti-inflammatories. The idea here is to reduce itching so that the skin can heal.In cases where anxiety or stress are suspected as contributing to the condition, anti-anxiety medication is also used. The key here is that neurodermatitis is best treated by a doctor. If you find yourself suffering from constant itching, your best bet is to visit your dermatologist. California Jump up ^ Yosipovitch, Gil; Bernhard, Jeffrey D. (2013-04-25). "Chronic Pruritus". Itchiness, Desire to Scratch, Chew or Lick Causing Inflamed Skin in Dogs Current evidence has shown that nonlesional skin is not normal skin, owing to persistent subclinical inflammation throughout the body.1-4 Chronic skin inflammation can be orchestrated by a mixture of activated immune and epidermal cells and can lead to pruritic lesion development.5-11 A growing consensus sees the epidermal layer of skin in atopic dermatitis as primed to react to environmental triggers, with signs and symptoms resulting from underlying hyperactivity in the deeper layers.2 Certain factors may affect your risk of neurodermatitis, including: Member benefits The value of Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure (KMO = 0.894) and Bartlett's test of sphericity (χ2= 649.908, P<0.001) support for factor analysis. We found Q1 (symptoms) accounted for 50.80% of the variance in DLQI score in this setting. The scree plot showed a sharp drop in eigenvalues from the first to the second component, with subsequent components extracting progressively less of the variance. This indicated that a one-dimensional solution is to be preferred (Fig. (Fig.1).1). The loadings of the DLQI items are given in Table Table6.6. All items show high loadings (> 0.40) from the first component. Volunteer opportunities Health Volunteers Overseas The earliest descriptions of AD have referred to it as “neurodermatitis” due to the belief that the itch and scratch cycle, which results in a rash, was related to nerves and emotions. Though a lot more has been learned about immunopathogenesis of AD, recognition of itching and scratching as hallmarks of this disease remains true. Itching is often worse at night. Chronic sleep disturbance due to frequent scratching can have adverse effects on the patient and his/her immediate family members and is a source of significant stress. When subjects with AD get upset, they tend to itch even more, probably secondary to flushing of the skin due to vasodilatation induced by neurogenic peptides, followed by histamine and prostaglandin E2 (Ostlere, Cowen et al. 1995). Papules, lichenification, and eczematous lesions result from repeated skin trauma. Vesicles and erythema with excoriation of the skin are seen in acute eczema. Crusted lesions and pustules are seen in infected eczema. Allergens, irritants (wool, soap, detergents, heat and humidity with sweating), infections, and certain foods can worsen eczema, and such history helps establish the right diagnosis. Distribution of rash on the face and extensor surfaces in infants and young children, changing to mostly flexural involvement in older ages, is a classic finding of AD and one of the essential features required to make this diagnosis. Dry skin (xerosis), personal and family history of allergic diseases, palmar hyperlinearity, nipple eczema, kera-tosis pilaris, pityriasis alba, and non-specific hand or foot dermatitis are some of the other clinical manifestations of this condition (Leung and Bieber 2003; Leung, Jain et al. 2003). The impact of AD on self-esteem and social interactions of kids or adults with this condition cannot be underestimated (Lapidus and Kerr 2001). Kinetic studies in lichen simplex chronicus have shown epidermal cell proliferation similar to that seen in psoriasis although the transit time of the cells is not as fast. There is also an increase in mitochondrial enzymes in keratinocytes and in the number of melanocytes in the basal layer. Although these kinetic aspects are known, there is still no explanation for the pathogenesis of these plaques and the underlying pruritus; it is apparent, however, that self-induced trauma plays an important localizing role.
