Lichen simplex chronicus (neurodermatitis) appears in patches on the neck, scalp, shoulders, feet, ankles, wrists and hands. The affected patch of skin becomes thick, leathery and even itchier the more it is rubbed or scratched as a result of irritated nerve endings in the skin. A retrospective study of 23 exposed women revealed nothing notable (Franssen 1999). Experimentally, coal tar products have, to some extent, demonstrated mutagenic or carcinogenic properties, but there has not yet been any indication of this in the longstanding and well-tried use of the group of substances employed therapeutically in humans. Neurodermatitis is a chronic, severely pruritic disorder characterized by 1 or more lichenified plaques in which the skin is thickened and there are accentuated skin markings. It affects adults, predominantly from ages 30 to 50 years. Women are affected more commonly than men. It may lead to demoralization, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, and distress through its impact on the patient's well‐being (Burgin, 2008). If the patient suffers from psychologic problems, the lesions are more likely to be persistent (Stander and Metze, 2009). Whether emotional factors are secondary to the primary dermatologic disease or they are primary and causative (altering perception of itch) is unclear. It has been postulated that neurotransmitters that affect mood, such as dopamine, serotonin, and opioid peptides, modulate perception of itch via descending spinal pathways (Burgin, 2008). There is no cure, but many treatments can help improve the skin's condition, making life easier. In those for whom these treatments do not work well or who fear their long‐term effects, there is often a belief that either something in their diet, or something missing in their diet, is making their eczema worse. In contrast to basic and clinical research in the field of male sexual dysfunction, the sexual problems of women have received relatively little attention and often remain untreated (Anastasiadis et al, 2002). Availability of board-certified allergists ABSTRACT: Neurodermatitis is a chronic disease affecting the patient's psychosocial status and quality of life. It is associated with a variety of psychologic problems, including demoralization, depression, anxiety, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, and sleep disturbances. Coexistence of sexual dysfunction, especially in women, with several systemic diseases has gained interest in recent years. In this study, we evaluated sexual function in female patients with neurodermatitis. We enrolled 89 women (43 patients, 46 controls) in the study. Quality of life was assessed with the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to determine sexual function. Individuals with psychiatric disorders and/or those using antidepressants were excluded. The total DLQI score was 11.95 ± 5.65 in patients with neurodermatitis. The total FSFI score was significantly lower in patients compared with healthy controls (22.76 ± 5.31 and 28.83 ± 3.50, respectively; P = .001). Domain scores of FSFI (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction) except pain were significantly lower in patients with neurodermatitis (P = .001). The pain score was also lower in patients than controls, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = .073). Neurodermatitis may be associated with sexual dysfunction, and patients with neurodermatitis should be evaluated with regard to sexual function to provide a better quality of life.
