What treatments are available, and which do you recommend? The total and individual domain scores of FSFI measurements are shown in Table 2. The total FSFI score was significantly lower in patients with neurodermatitis compared with that in healthy controls (22.76 ± 5.31 and 28.83 ± 3.50, respectively; P = .001). Separate analyses of domain scores revealed significant decreases in all domains (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction) except pain in patients with neurodermatitis. The pain domain score was also lower in the patient group, but the difference between the 2 groups was not statistically significant (P = .073). It is associated with a variety of psychologic problems, including demoralization, depression, anxiety, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, and sleep disturbances. Coexistence of sexual dysfunction, especially in women, with several systemic diseases has gained interest in recent years. In this study, we evaluated sexual function in female patients with neurodermatitis. We enrolled 89 women (43 patients, 46 controls) in the study. Quality of life was assessed with the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to determine sexual function. Individuals with psychiatric disorders and/or those using antidepressants were excluded. The total DLQI score was 11.95 ± 5.65 in patients with neurodermatitis. The total FSFI score was significantly lower in patients compared with healthy controls (22.76 ± 5.31 and 28.83 ± 3.50, respectively; P = .001). Domain scores of FSFI (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction) except pain were significantly lower in patients with neurodermatitis (P = .001). The pain score was also lower in patients than controls, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = .073). Neurodermatitis may be associated with sexual dysfunction, and patients with neurodermatitis should be evaluated with regard to sexual function to provide a better quality of life. Covering the affected area can help the medicine penetrate thickened skin and prevent scratching. Other ways to avoiding scratching include cutting fingernails very short or using coal tar preparation. For example, chronic stress, major depression, schizophrenia, or anorexia nervosa seem to be associated with a hyperactive HPA axis, whereas a hyporeactive HPA axis is found more often in CFS, autoimmune processes, or PTSD. Since there are only few longitudinal data available to date on the relationship between HPA activity and stress-related disorders, the question of cause and effect remains to be answered in future research. aha!shop: other booklets and factsheets provides detailed information and are available in German, French, Italian Kommunikation und Zusatzverkäufe Stem cells Formats: For tacrolimus as an ointment, see Chapter 2.17. Previous reports have suggested higher rates of AD in areas with so-called hard water and among children born in fall or winter. This study looked for a possible synergistic relationship between these two AD risk factors. The researchers analyzed data on nearly 53,000 children from the Danish National Birth Cohort. National data sources were used to gather birth data and information on domestic water hardness, which differs across Danish regions. Physician diagnosis of AD and other characteristics were assessed in parental interviews when the children were 6 and 18 months old. Overall prevalence of AD was 15.0%. Prevalence ranged from 13.5% to 17.1% in regions with the softest versus hardest domestic water; relative prevalence of AD increased by 5% per 5-degree increase in water hardness. Hard water accounted for an estimated 2% of the population risk of AD. Relative prevalence of AD was 24% higher for children born in fall and 18% higher for those born in winter. There was no evidence of interaction between season of birth and water hardness. Both hard domestic water and fall/winter birth are associated with a higher prevalence of AD in early childhood. Risk of AD increases along with degree of water hardness, but there is no synergistic interaction between these two risk factors. Further studies are needed to see if water softening can reduce AD risk in infants. Natural Center Autoallergy: a pathogenetic factor in atopic dermatitis?. The Lancet Haematology Scopus (200) Although not psoriasiform, mention is made of a recently described entity that clinically resembles lichen simplex chronicus or lichen amyloidosus but which has no histological similarities at all – pretibial pruritic papular dermatitis. The authors of that paper proposed that it was a response to chronic rubbing, possibly with other contributing factors such as xerosis, contact with irritants, and emotional distress. The lesions were red to flesh colored, pruritic papules 3–8 mm in diameter. There was a cobblestone appearance in some later lesions. Lesions were unilateral in 33/44 cases and bilateral in 11/44. The histology showed mild compact orthokeratosis, flattening of the rete ridges, superficial dermal fibrosis, and a mild to moderate superficial and mid-dermal infiltrate of lymphocytes, histiocytes and a few eosinophils. Stellate cells were present, probably a reflection of scratching. The published photomicrographs show some resemblance to pigmented purpuric dermatosis but there was no hemosiderin. The severity of illness for each patient was rated as 1 of 5 stages: 0, no evidence of clinical disease; I, limited disease; II, mild disease; III, moderate disease; and IV, severe disease. DIDS was applied as the measuring tool to determine the disease severity. Cover the affected area. Bandages or dressings can help protect the skin and prevent scratching.
