About us Travel Health Factors affecting skin barrier function might influence the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD). Previous reports have suggested higher rates of AD in areas with so-called hard water and among children born in fall or winter. This study looked for a possible synergistic relationship between these two AD risk factors. The researchers analyzed data on nearly 53,000 children from the Danish National Birth Cohort. National data sources were used to gather birth data and information on domestic water hardness, which differs across Danish regions. Physician diagnosis of AD and other characteristics were assessed in parental interviews when the children were 6 and 18 months old. Overall prevalence of AD was 15.0%. Prevalence ranged from 13.5% to 17.1% in regions with the softest versus hardest domestic water; relative prevalence of AD increased by 5% per 5-degree increase in water hardness. Hard water accounted for an estimated 2% of the population risk of AD. Relative prevalence of AD was 24% higher for children born in fall and 18% higher for those born in winter. There was no evidence of interaction between season of birth and water hardness. Both hard domestic water and fall/winter birth are associated with a higher prevalence of AD in early childhood. Risk of AD increases along with degree of water hardness, but there is no synergistic interaction between these two risk factors. Further studies are needed to see if water softening can reduce AD risk in infants. The latest research relating Neurodermatitis Neurodermatitis is a chronic, severely pruritic disorder characterized by 1 or more lichenified plaques in which the skin is thickened and there are accentuated skin markings. It affects adults, predominantly from ages 30 to 50 years. Women are affected more commonly than men. It may lead to demoralization, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, and distress through its impact on the patient's well‐being (Burgin, 2008). If the patient suffers from psychologic problems, the lesions are more likely to be persistent (Stander and Metze, 2009). Whether emotional factors are secondary to the primary dermatologic disease or they are primary and causative (altering perception of itch) is unclear. It has been postulated that neurotransmitters that affect mood, such as dopamine, serotonin, and opioid peptides, modulate perception of itch via descending spinal pathways (Burgin, 2008). They are more suitable for use when the patient has Liver-Yin and Blood deficiency, and disturbance of the Liver-Wind, such as seen in pruritus in elderly people, skin diseases starting or worsening in stressful situations, itchy rashes in the evening, in the night or after menstruation, and chronic skin diseases. Since external Wind and internal Wind often coexist—for instance, the itch may not only be worse in the above conditions, but also when the weather changes, after taking spicy food or during cold infections—therefore substances that expel external Wind and those that extinguish internal Wind can be used together.
