What you can do Information for Readers One hundred and fifty consecutive outpatients seeking treatment for neurodermatitis and 250 patients with psoriasis in the Department of Dermatology, the Second Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, were assessed for eligibility for this prospective study from July 1, 2011 to September 30, 2011. All subjects were given informed consent prior to participation. Patients less than 18 years old or having any other skin/systemic disease or mental disorders were excluded from the study. The study was approved by the ethics committee at the hospital. Previous reports have suggested higher rates of AD in areas with so-called hard water and among children born in fall or winter. This study looked for a possible synergistic relationship between these two AD risk factors. The researchers analyzed data on nearly 53,000 children from the Danish National Birth Cohort. National data sources were used to gather birth data and information on domestic water hardness, which differs across Danish regions. Physician diagnosis of AD and other characteristics were assessed in parental interviews when the children were 6 and 18 months old. Overall prevalence of AD was 15.0%. Prevalence ranged from 13.5% to 17.1% in regions with the softest versus hardest domestic water; relative prevalence of AD increased by 5% per 5-degree increase in water hardness. Hard water accounted for an estimated 2% of the population risk of AD. Relative prevalence of AD was 24% higher for children born in fall and 18% higher for those born in winter. There was no evidence of interaction between season of birth and water hardness. Both hard domestic water and fall/winter birth are associated with a higher prevalence of AD in early childhood. Risk of AD increases along with degree of water hardness, but there is no synergistic interaction between these two risk factors. Further studies are needed to see if water softening can reduce AD risk in infants. Subscribe to receive email notifications whenever new articles are published. Wadsworth J Anti-itch medications. Skin diseases such as neurodermatitis are another indication; this will be discussed elsewhere (see Chapter 2.17). Certain advantages and disadvantages of tacrolimus in pregnancy are discussed compared to cyclosporine: rejection and hypertension are less common with tacrolimus, and the necessary dosage of prednisolone is lower. On the other hand, gestational diabetes occurs more often, as does transient hyperkalemia and transient reduction of kidney function in the newborn. Jain (1997) even reported on a newborn with anuria which lasted 36 hours. As with other immunosuppressant drugs, pre-eclampsia, prematurity, low birth weight, and cesarian births were seen at greater incidence. It's hard to name a disease, in which the exact implementation of all preventive and therapeutic recommendations would be more important than in the presence of neurodermatitis. Furthermore, it should be emphasized that it must not be treated by waiting ("it would pass with age") and mask (a prescription of only antihistamines and hormonal ointments) treatments. contact dermatitis | lichen simplex chronicus scalp contact dermatitis | lichen simplex chronicus treatment adults contact dermatitis | lichen simplex pictures
