It is not effective in all types of the disease. It may be used in males and females who are not pregnant and not planning to become pregnant for at least three years. The major side effects include dryness of skin and eyes and temporarily elevated levels of triglycerides and cholesterol (fatty substance) in the blood. Blood tests are generally required before starting this therapy and are needed periodically to monitor triglyceride levels. Patients should not become pregnant while on this drug and usually avoid becoming pregnant for at least three years after stopping this medication.

When participants were stratified according to sex (Figure 2A, Table 4) and marital status (Figure 2C, Table 4), no significant differences were found. However, when different age groups were compared, it was striking that, on average, older participants ( ≥65 years) found the probability of benefit to be less important than younger participants did (Figure 2B). This finding was confirmed in our regression analysis ( β  =   –0.24; P  =  .005, Table 4).

Several forms of light therapy have been used to treat psoriasis for hundreds of years. In the 1920s, William Goeckerman combined the use of ultraviolet B (UVB) phototherapy with topical application of tars.14 This inpatient psoriasis regimen, known as the Goeckerman regimen, is still occasionally used, but outpatient regimens using UVB phototherapy with emollients have largely replaced the inpatient regimens.
