Unlike acne, tinea versicolor is caused by a fungal infection. It’s essentially a yeast overgrowth on your skin. The organism can be found on healthy skin and on skin regions demonstrating cutaneous disease. In patients with clinical disease, the organism is found in both the yeast (spore) stage and the filamentous (hyphal) form. Factors that lead to the conversion of the saprophytic yeast to the parasitic, mycelial morphologic form include a genetic predisposition; warm, humid environments; immunosuppression; malnutrition; pregnancy; and Cushing disease. Human peptide cathelicidin LL-37 plays a role in skin defense against this organism.

Herpes zoster, more commonly known as shingles, is a painful viral infection caused by varicella zoster, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a childhood attack of chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in the nerve cells that extend from the spinal cord or the brain. Years to decades later, the virus can be reactivated, resulting in an eruption of skin lesions. (Therefore, you cannot develop shingles unless you have had an earlier case of chickenpox.) The blistery rash characteristic of shingles follows a line on one side of the body or face in an area supplied by a particular nerve.

If shingles affects the nerve that leads to the eye, the eye may be infected. Eye infection is more common when sores occur on the forehead, near the eye, and especially on the tip of the nose. This infection (called herpes zoster ophthalmicus) can be serious. Even with treatment, vision may be affected.

Readers Comments 57 A person must have already had chickenpox in the past to develop shingles. A person cannot get shingles from a person that has shingles. However, the virus that causes chickenpox and shingles can be spread from a person with active shingles to a person who has never had chickenpox or had the chickenpox vaccine. The person exposed to the virus would develop chickenpox, not shingles. A person with shingles can spread the virus when the rash is in the blister-phase. The blister fluid is filled with virus particles. The virus is spread through direct contact with the rash or through breathing in virus particles that get mixed in the air. Once the rash has developed crusts, the person is no longer contagious. A person is not infectious before blisters appear or if pain persists after the rash is gone (post-herpetic neuralgia).

Poppy Sauvage by Violette $7.39 Mayo Clinic Footer Patricia Wexler, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, has an even speedier fix. When a young starlet came to her four hours before a call time with a whopping cyst, Wexler topped the injection site with a concentrated dose of dehydrating trichloracetic acid, or TCA, and the lump immediately flattened out, she says, so the patient didn’t have to wait hours for the cortisone to kick in. Customer Review Rating 3.8 of 5 42 reviews JAAD quizzes Hypersensitive skin is a severe form of sensitive skin. It reacts quickly and strongly to triggers that are usually well tolerated by normal skin. These triggers include environmental factors (such as extreme temperature changes and atmospheric pollution), psychological factors (such as stress) and external factors (including spicy food, alcohol, detergents and inappropriate skincare products). Contact results in unpleasant skin sensations such as stinging, itching or burning. To manage hypersensitive skin, sufferers need to minimise exposure to known triggers and follow a special, active skin care routine to increase skin tolerance, reduce irritation and restore skin comfort. Read more about hypersensitive skin in general or hypersensitive facial skin.
