white spots on skin from sun fungus | tinea versicolor selenium sulfide

Most Popular Articles Pityriasis versicolor is caused by mycelial growth of fungi of the genus Malassezia.
Tinea versicolor is caused by the dimorphic, lipophilic organisms in the genus Malassezia, formerly known as Pityrosporum. Fourteen species are recognized within this classification of yeasts, of which Malassezia globosa, Malassezia sympodialis, and Malassezia furfur are the predominant species isolated in tinea versicolor. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8] Malassezia is extremely difficult to propagate in laboratory culture and is culturable only in media enriched with C12- to C14-sized fatty acids. Malassezia is naturally found on the skin surfaces of many animals, including humans. Indeed, it can be isolated in 18% of infants and 90-100% of adults. [9]

Usually malassezia grow sparsely in the seborrhoeic areas (scalp, face and chest) without causing a rash. It is not known why they grow more actively on the skin surface of patients prone to pityriasis versicolor. One theory implicates a tryptophan-dependent metabolic pathway.

The yeast that causes tinea versicolor lives on everyone’s skin. It is not clear why the yeast overgrows on some people’s skin and not others. We do know the following about tinea versicolor:

Become more noticeable when you have a tan (the yeast prevents the skin from tanning).

Your physician will typically diagnose tinea versicolor based on clinical exam and patient history; if needed, the ultraviolet black light (Wood’s light) may be supportive, revealing coppery-orange fluorescence. The diagnosis can be confirmed by potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation, which demonstrates the classic “spaghetti and meatballs” of short, cigar butt hyphae and spores.

Sometimes the spots are so faint that people do not realize they have tinea versicolor. If tinea versicolor causes light spots on the skin, it can be mistaken for vitiligo. Vitiligo is a skin disease that causes the skin to lose its natural color.
