International Services The treatment of infantile seborrheic dermatitis consists primarily of emollients that help loosen scales (e.g., mineral or olive oil, petroleum jelly). Scales can then be removed by rubbing with a cloth or infant hair brush.10,11 One study showed that ketoconazole 1% to 2% cream is effective and seems to be safe when used twice daily for two weeks.12 There are no shampoos that have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treatment of seborrheic dermatitis in children younger than two years.

Ketoconazole Edition: ENGLISH The mainstays of treatment for facial seborrheic dermatitis are topical antifungals, corticosteroids, and calcineurin inhibitors. Ketoconazole 2% is as effective as hydrocortisone 1% cream.22 Ketoconazole 2% gel (Xolegel) significantly reduced symptoms of erythema, pruritus, and scaling compared with vehicle alone.23 Ciclopirox appears to be better tolerated and more effective than ketoconazole 2% gel.24,25 Ciclopirox 1% cream (not available in the United States) was shown in a randomized, double-blinded trial to greatly reduce symptoms when used as a maintenance medication.24 Sertaconazole 2% cream (Ertaczo) was more effective than hydrocortisone 1% cream in one study.26 In light of their effectiveness, low adverse effect profile, and reasonable cost, topical antifungals are the preferred agents for acute and long-term treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the face and body.3,14–16,22–26

It is unclear why seborrheic dermatitis develops. As mentioned, seborrheic dermatitis is more common in men. Although the exact incidence and prevalence are unknown, seborrheic dermatitis typically begins in two age groups. The infantile form begins at about 1 week of age and may last for several months but is a self-limited disease. The adult type begins in the 4-6th decades of life and is a chronic, waxing and waning skin condition. There is no evidence of horizontal spread of seborrheic dermatitis.

Resources Skin Care at Home Moisturizers helps protect the outermost layer of skin known as the stratum corneum or skin barrier. People living with eczema have a damaged skin barrier, which makes their skin more sensitive to irritants, allergens, bacteria and other invaders. A damaged skin barrier also make it harder for the skin to retain water, leading to chronic dry, itchy skin, which can cause eczema to flare or get worse.
Topical medications Creams are second to ointments in the amount of oil they contain and are also very good at sealing in moisture. Because they contain less oil, they are also less greasy to the touch. Be sure to read labels carefully — creams sometimes contain stabilizers or preservatives that can irritate your skin.

In terms of a person’s health, genital herpes is usually nothing to worry about. According to the National Institutes of Health, many people with genital herpes never even have outbreaks or their outbreaks decrease over time (one or two outbreaks a year is not uncommon). The virus can lie dormant in your system for years without coming to the surface. The initial outbreak is often the worst, occurring a few days to a couple of weeks after being infected. Symptoms may include a fever, headache, and muscle aches for a few weeks. But for the most part, outbreaks consist of painful fever blisters or sores on or near the genitals (or, in less common cases, sores appearing elsewhere) for a few days, as well as burning, itching, swelling, and irritation that may be triggered by stress or fatigue. The virus never goes away, and some take antiviral medicines to relieve or suppress outbreaks.

However, concerns about appearance and ethnic identity are significant issues for many affected individuals.
Pediatric Dermatology They basically all involve transplanting the patient’s normal melanocytes into areas of vitiligo. This can be accomplished by taking small “pinch” grafts or split thickness grafts of normal skin and placing them into suitably prepared recipient sites. If all goes well, the melanocytes gradually grow out of the grafts and repopulate the surrounding involved skin.

Autoimmune and cytotoxic hypotheses: Aberration of immune surveillance results in melanocyte dysfunction or destruction. The autoimmune theory proposes alteration in humoral and cellular immunity in the destruction of melanocytes of vitiligo. [9, 10, 11] This theory is of particular relevance given the fact that nonsegmental vitiligo is more frequently associated with autoimmune conditions than is segmental vitiligo. [12] Hence, making a diagnosis of nonsegmental vitiligo in a person with a family history of autoimmune disease may warrant a more thorough workup. For these reasons, certain disorders have been linked to vitiligo, such as: Hashimoto thyroiditis, Graves disease, Addison disease and diabetes mellitus, alopecia areata, pernicious anemia, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis, and autoimmune polyglandular syndrome. The most convincing evidence of an autoimmune pathogenesis is the presence of circulating antibodies against melanocyte proteins in patients with vitiligo. [13] In addition to humoral immune mechanisms, strong evidence indicates involvement of cellular immunity. Destruction of melanocytes may be directly mediated by autoreactive CD8 + T cells. Activated CD8 + T cells have been demonstrated in perilesional vitiligo skin. [10, 11]

Let’s watch Apple’s iPhone X event live stream together To treat a sunburn, the very best thing you can do is prevent yourself from getting one in the first place. Wear protective clothing, don’t stay out in the light for too long, slather on gobs of sunscreen (far more than you think you should), and reapply often.
That said, the sunburn will eventually clear up and the itch should go with it. Once your skin is back on track, be very careful when it comes to prolonged sun exposure. Covering up with clothing, sitting under umbrellas, and wearing a high SPF sunscreen — that you reapply every 80 minutes — can help keep this from happening again.

Plastic Surgery Overview Malassezia furfur is a dimorphic fungus that is normally a harmless component of normal skin flora but that in some people causes tinea versicolor. Most affected people are healthy. Factors that may predispose to tinea versicolor include heat and humidity and immunosuppression due to corticosteroids, pregnancy, undernutrition, diabetes, or other disorders. Hypopigmentation in tinea versicolor is due to the inhibition of tyrosinase caused by M. furfur production of azelaic acid.
Treatments are generally well tolerated but may cause skin irritation or contact dermatitis. Response to treatment should be within weeks. The eruption may recur and may be retreated in the same fashion.

In steroid-associated atrophying tinea versicolor, the Malassezia infecting the epidermis may impair the barrier function of skin, thus allowing improved penetration of topical corticosteroids. This may lead to enhanced corticosteroid-induced atrophy of the affected skin. [16, 17, 18] However, as atrophying tinea versicolor has been reported in patients who have not used topical steroids, it has been proposed that a T-cell–mediated immune response to the Malassezia organism may be responsible for the atrophy noted. This theory suggests that Th1 cytokines recruit histiocytes to the site of epidermal infection. These histiocytes serve as a source of elastases and they up-regulate the metalloproteinase activity, ultimately leading to atrophy of the affected epidermis. [17, 19, 20]

Douglas Grider, M.D. Oral antifungals including ketoconazole or fluconazole in a single dose, or ketoconazole for seven days, or itraconazole can be used.[17][18] The single-dose regimens, or pulse therapy regimens, can be made more effective by having the patient exercise 1–2 hours after the dose, to induce sweating. The sweat is allowed to evaporate, and showering is delayed for a day, leaving a film of the medication on the skin.[19]

Tinea versicolor can usually be effectively treated using topical (externally applied) medications. These contain a substance that keeps the fungus from growing or kills it. Even with treatment, it can take several months for the skin to return to normal. Tinea versicolor is a skin condition that affects about 1% of the population in countries with a moderate climate. The main symptom is discolored (lighter or darker) patches of skin, mostly on the upper body. It is caused by a type of fungus that is found on most people’s skin. Tinea versicolor is not contagious.
