Hepatitis C infection may increase susceptibility, especially to oral disease. There may be a link between lichen planus and infection with the hepatitis C virus. Many people with hepatitis C also have lichen planus. Your dermatologist may check to see whether you have this virus.
View PDF Español Generally, oral lichen planus tends not to cause any discomfort or pain, although some people may experience soreness when eating or drinking acidic or spicy foodstuffs or beverages.[38] When symptoms arise, they are most commonly associated with the atrophic and ulcerative subtypes. These symptoms can include a burning sensation to severe pain.[37] Lichen planus, particularly when concomitant oral or genital lesions occur, significantly affects patients’ quality of life.

+ Pterygium unguis Histopathological findings revealed that the epithelium was completely separated from the underlying connective tissue. The epithelium was hyperplastic, with parakeratinized stratified squamous epithelium showing signs of hypeparakeratosis, acanthosis, and hydropic degeneration of the basal layer. A dense band-like lymphocytic infiltration was found at the epithelial-connective tissue interface, and there were areas of atrophic epithelium with saw-tooth rete ridges (Figure 3 and Figure 4).
Mouth Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the skin and the mucus membrane. Oral lichen planus (OLP), the mucosal counterpart of cutaneous lichen planus, presents frequently in the fourth decade of life and affects women more than men in a ratio of 1.4:1.[1] The disease affects 1–2% of the population.[2,3] It is seen clinically as reticular, papular, plaque-like, erosive, atrophic or bullous types. Intraorally, the buccal mucosa, tongue and the gingiva are commonly involved although other sites may be rarely affected.[4] Oral mucosal lesions present alone or with concomitant skin lesions. The skin lesions present as violaceous flat-topped papules in ankles, wrist, and genitalia, but characteristically the facial skin is spared.

Most people with lichen planus experience no to few symptoms, others may have painful sores or ulcers in the mouth. Severe lichen planus slightly increases the risk for oral cancer. Oral lichen planus may occur alone or in combination with other skin forms of lichen planus.[1][2][3]

PUVA therapy: A type of light treatment that can help clear the skin. Jenny Kim Lab Subscribe to RSS The Skin You’re In Although a laddering approach to therapy has not yet been studied in the setting of a randomized clinical trial, to our knowledge, the favorable response rates we observed for individual therapies within the ladder are consistent with others reported in the literature. For example, complete responses were observed in 68% of patients with OLP treated with either systemic plus topical corticosteroids or topical corticosteroids alone.15 We never selected systemic corticosteroids as a long-term treatment option because of the potential for toxic effects in patients with this chronic disease; rather, for patients referred who were receiving this regimen, the regimen was tapered to other therapies. A study16 of topical retinoids showed complete responses in 19 of 19 patients after long-term follow-up. Our study also confirmed the efficacy of oral thalidomide in this patient population, adding to the limited literature17-20 on the use of this drug for patients with advanced OLP.

For mild cases of lichen planus, which usually clear up in weeks or months, you may not need any treatment. If the symptoms are uncomfortable or severe, your doctor can prescribe medication.

Nail changes have been reported in about 10 percent of lichen planus cases. The majority of nail changes result from damage to the nail matrix, or nail root. Usually only a few fingernails or toenails are involved, but occasionally are all affected. Nail changes associated with lichen planus include longitudinal riding and grooving, splitting, nail thinning and nail loss. In severe cases, the nail may be temporarily or permanently destroyed.

If you have oral lichen planus, you may have lichen planus lesions affecting other parts of your body.
Two separate sets of patients were used in this study, to allow extrapolation of our results from the first set of patients to the second set of patients. The second set of patients exhibited similar clinical and pathological characteristics of OLP, thus demonstrating that these proteins could be used as markers for OLP. The first set included five patients with OLP and five sex-matched healthy control participants. Saliva samples from the five OLP patients and five healthy control participants in the first set were separately pooled, then subjected to two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) followed by MS. The second set of patients was recruited for the validation of the results from the first set of patients; for the second set of patients, we used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoblotting analyses. This second set of participants was composed of 24 OLP patients and 24 age-matched control subjects.
