In severe cases, the cornea can be damaged. This can affect your vision.

About 25 percent of all healthy adults will get shingles during their lifetimes, usually after age 40. Shingles, also called herpes zoster, is an infection caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. It can cause nerve inflammation and intense pain, a reddened rash, and blisters (vesicles) that break open and crust over before slowly resolving. In most cases, the rash and pain subside within a few weeks, but some of those affected may have severe pain that lingers for months or even years.

This is the most frequent way shingles is presumptively diagnosed. The rash may occasionally extend outside of this band or, infrequently, to the other side of the body. Rarely, there may be only pain in a dermatome band without a rash.
