Examples of allergic dermatitis include reactions to poison ivy, antibiotics, nickel and other substances. This is an allergic condition that involves the immune system. But it does not involve the IgE antibody. The IgE antibody is responsible for classic allergic reactions.

Intense itching is common. Itching may start even before the rash appears. Atopic dermatitis is often called the “itch that rashes” because the itching starts, and then the skin rash follows as a result of scratching.
Stasis dermatitis is caused by poor circulation in the legs and can happen in people with varicose veins, congestive heart failure, or other conditions that cause chronic leg swelling. Veins in the lower legs fail to return blood efficiently, causing pooling of blood and fluid buildup and swelling. This swelling leads to skin irritation, especially around the ankles.

Contact dermatitis (CD) is a common skin problem occurring in 15% to 20% of people. It can have a significant financial burden with direct and indirect costs from lost time off work and school. CD may be allergic (ACD) or irritant (ICD). ICD is more common (80%) and can occur in anyone, especially after repeated exposure. Symptoms are a burning or stinging sensation with redness, swelling or peeling. Soaps, detergents, acids, bases, solvents, saliva, urine and stool are the most common triggers for ICD. Allergic CD, on the other hand, is seen in genetically predisposed and previously sensitized individuals who react to even low concentrations of the agent. Cosmetics, medicines, clothes dyes, as well as foods, rubber and poison ivy are common causes of ACD. Any topical cream or ointment may contain chemicals that irritate the skin. It is important to bring your personal products with you when you see your doctor so they can be examined as a potential cause of the dermatitis.

Dermatitis simply means skin inflammation, but it embraces a range of ailments. In most people, the early stages of dermatitis are characterized by red, dry, and itchy skin. More serious dermatitis may result in crusty scales, painful cracks, or blisters that ooze fluid. Since many things can irritate the skin, a doctor will try to narrow the diagnosis to a specific category of dermatitis, even though treatment is similar for most types of skin irritation and inflammation.

Antihistamines block the release of histamines, a protein that is released by the body’s immune system as part of an allergic reaction in response to an antigen. The primary function of histamine is to increase blood flow and nerve activity, which causes redness, rash, and itching, however, antihistamines have been found to have little effect in treating AD.6

  11. Irritant contact dermatitis usually stays on the skin where the exposure to the allergen occurred. If the exposure is to a strong irritant, an immediate reaction including pain, swelling and sometimes blistering can be present. If there is ongoing exposure to a mild irritant such as water or soap, the reaction can occur over a period of weeks to months and involve dryness, itching and cracking.
