NYU Health Sciences Library  Phototherapy is treatment with light that uses ultraviolet A or B light waves or a combination of both. This treatment can be an effective treatment for mild to moderate dermatitis in older children (over 12 years old) and adults. Photochemotherapy, a combination of ultraviolet light therapy and a drug called psoralen, can also be used in cases that are resistant to phototherapy alone. Possible long-term side effects of this treatment include premature skin aging and skin cancer. If the doctor thinks that phototherapy may be useful in treating the symptoms of atopic dermatitis, he or she will use the minimum exposure necessary and monitor the skin carefully.
A person may develop irritant dermatitis as a result of repeated exposure to sports equipment such as shin guards or a helmet or frequent hand washing with harsh soaps. Acidic substances or harsh chemicals in the workplace can also cause irritant dermatitis when they come into contact with skin.

Substances that can irritate the skin include detergents, soaps, cleaners, waxes, and chemicals. These substances can wear down the oily, protective layer on the skin’s surface and lead to irritant contact dermatitis. This condition is most common among people who regularly work with strong chemicals, such as restaurant, maintenance, and chemical workers.

email: aaiq@fmsq.org Advocate of the Year Award Dermatitis was estimated to affect 245 million people globally in 2015.[5] Atopic dermatitis is the most common type and generally starts in childhood.[1][2] In the United States, it affects about 10–30% of people.[2] Contact dermatitis is twice as common in females than males.[9] Allergic contact dermatitis affects about 7% of people at some point in time.[10] Irritant contact dermatitis is common, especially among people who do certain jobs; exact rates are unclear.[11]
Offers support groups and telephone support for people living with atopic dermatitis Light therapy using ultraviolet light has tentative support but the quality of the evidence is not very good.[59] A number of different types of light may be used including UVA and UVB;[60] in some forms of treatment, light sensitive chemicals such as psoralen are also used. Overexposure to ultraviolet light carries its own risks, particularly that of skin cancer.[61]
Some people may choose to use complementary therapies for contact dermatitis, such as food supplements or herbal remedies, but there is often a lack of evidence to show they are effective in treating the condition.

Getting Diagnosed Victims of irritant contact dermatitis often consult a doctor or nurse. While some experimental tests can provide an indication of the irritant potential of substances, no single test can reliably identify irritants in specific cases. In the evaluation of occupational irritant contact dermatitis, the best approach is to identify the conditions of exposure by discussing the victim’s employment. The information to be gathered includes a detailed list of all chemicals in the individual’s working environment; a detailed description of all processes involved in a day’s work; and any information about other workers, if any, who have similar skin problems.

One theory that relates to the cause of AD is the hygiene hypothesis. People who are exposed to more pathogens have a less likelihood of developing AD, and there is an increased incidence of AD in people from developed countries. Researchers have theorized that this may be due to an increase in hygiene in developed countries, including an increased use of antibiotics. Additional research is needed to determine if there is a causal link between antibiotic use early in life and the development of AD.8

Antifungal products. This can either be a shampoo + medication combination (such as ketoconazole, combined with Temovate, or another clobetasol scalp product). Use these twice a week. As an alternative, you may also opt for medication, which is typically Lamisil, or another drug containing terbinafine. Due to the second option’s serious side effects (allergies, afflictions of the liver), the first one is always preferable).
While emotional factors and stress may sometimes exacerbate the condition, they do not seem to be a primary or underlying cause for the disorder.
