eMedicineHealth Weak expression of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 has been found in OLP. TGF-β1 deficiency may predispose to autoimmune lymphocytic inflammation. The balance between TGF-β1 and IFN-γ determines the level of immunological activity in OLP lesions. Local overproduction of IFN-γ by CD4+ T cells in OLP lesions downregulates the immunosuppressive effect of TGF-β1 and upregulates keratinocyte MHC class II expression and CD8+ cytotoxic T-cell activity.[1,8]

Nutrition & Oral Health Routine hematological investigations and biochemistry yielded negative results. An incisional biopsy was performed, and a wedge of tissue including both the epithelium and connective tissue was obtained from the most prominent area, which was the lingual side of the mandibular anteriors. It is important to obtain an elliptical wedge of mucosa extending beyond the affected area to avoid stripping the superficial epithelial layer from the underlying connective tissue. However, as the lesion was generalized—involving both the arches—performing a biopsy was challenging, with the epithelium stripping away from the underlying connective tissue.

Shows typical histology (see “Pathology” below) Colgate® 2in1 Using a 2D gel-based proteomic approach, we found 31 protein spots with either a ≥ 1.5-fold difference in abundance or an exclusive presence in one of the study groups (OLP patients or healthy controls); these spots were excised for further identification by LC-MS/MS. We ultimately identified 20 unique proteins, of which 13 exhibited increased expression in OLP patients, compared with healthy control subjects (Tables 2 and 3). In contrast, the remaining seven proteins exhibited decreased expression in OLP patients (Tables 2 and 4).

Fit Kids What were the symptoms and signs of your lichen planus? Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the mucus membrane of the oral cavity. It is a T-cell mediated autoimmune disease in which the cytotoxic CD8+ T cells trigger apoptosis of the basal cells of the oral epithelium. Several antigen-specific and nonspecific inflammatory mechanisms have been put forward to explain the accumulation and homing of CD8+ T cells subepithelially and the subsequent keratinocyte apoptosis. A wide spectrum of treatment modalities is available, from topical corticosteroids to laser ablation of the lesion. In this review, we discuss the various concepts in the pathogenesis and current treatment modalities of OLP.

The samples were then centrifuged (2500 g, 10 min), and saliva (without sputum) and serum were transferred to separate microtubes. The samples were frozen at −70 °C. After completion of sampling, the samples were sent to a lab to determine the level of Mucin 5B by ELISA using a kit (EASTBIOPHARM, Hangzhou, China).

Griseofulvin 250 mg po bid given for 3 to 6 mo may be effective. Cyclosporine (1.25 to 2.5 mg/kg bid) can be used when corticosteroids or retinoids fail. Light therapy using psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) or narrowband ultraviolet B (NBUVB) is an alternative to oral therapies, especially if they have failed or are contraindicated.

Papule rosse (cute), bianche e reticolate (lingua, guance) Herpes Simplex Lichen planus (LP) is a pruritic eruption commonly associated with hepatitis C. Lesions are characteristically papular, purple (violaceous color), polygonal, and peripherally located (eg. on the distal extremities). LP may also affect the genitalia or mucous membranes. It is most likely an immunologically mediated reaction, though the pathophysiology in unclear. See Oral Lichen Planus for more information on this variant of lichen planus.

Lichen planus is a chronic recurrent inflammatory disorder of the skin and mucous membranes. It is characterized by small, flat-topped, polygonal bumps that may coalesce into rough, scaly plaques on the skin. There may also be involvement of the lining tissue (mucous membranes) of the mouth and/or vagina.
