Kidney Disease Philanthropy in Action “He diagnosed me in seconds with classic shingles,” she relates, noting that the virus had lain dormant in her cervical nerve and attacked the right side of her head and face. She was immediately prescribed anti-viral medication, the first line of defense against shingles, to help reduce pain and complications and shorten the course of the disease. These medications should be started within 24 hours of feeling pain or burning, ideally before the blisters appear – underscoring the importance of seeking prompt medical attention when shingles symptoms first occur.
Who should get it: The CDC recommends that you get this vaccine if you’re 50 or older. If you have had the Zostavax vaccine, you can also have Shingrix.
Prealbumin Thanks to what the manufacturer, Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK), has called “unprecedented” demand for the vaccine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising doctors and providers to anticipate ordering limits and intermittent shipping delays until the end of 2018. While GSK has reported that shipments have just resumed and that “large volumes” of Shingrix will be going out every two to three weeks for the rest of the year, it’s also recommending that patients be prepared to call their pharmacy “often” or have the drugstore call them when the vaccine is back in stock.

Shingles has two features that distinguish it from conditions with similar symptoms: its flu-like onset and the severe pain that follows. Some people who develop shingles continue to suffer pain and other symptoms long after their rash has cleared up. This condition is known as post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). If you have PHN, your doctor may prescribe other drugs to help manage your pain, including tricyclic antidepressants, opioids, anticonvulsants, and topical local anesthetics.

Research and Clinical Trials Anyone who has had chickenpox can get shingles, although it is most common in individuals over the age of 50. Individuals who have conditions, or are undergoing medical treatments, that weaken their immune systems are also more likely to develop shingles. These include: HIV infection; chemotherapy or radiation therapy; corticosteroids; transplant operations and possibly stress. National Shingles Foundation estimates that nearly one million individuals develop shingles in the U.S. each year.

It does not prevent shingles in every case, but, should shingles develop, it is typically a more mild and short-lived case, and it minimizes the risk for postherpetic neuralgia. The vaccine also minimizes the chance for recurrence of shingles. In diabetics, for example, the shingles recurrence rate is at least 4 percent. So yes, it is possible to get shingles more than once.

If you have shingles, try to stay away from anyone who has not had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine, or anyone who might have a weak immune system.
About 30 percent of the U.S. population will experience shingles in their lifetime. While young people do develop shingles, the ailment most often occurs after age 50, with the incidence increasing with age. Most cases of shingles occur in people who are in otherwise good health, but the chance of developing shingles is greatest for people whose immune system is weakened—for example, people infected with the HIV virus or cancer patients undergoing drug or radiation treatment.

The medicines are most effective if you can take them within 3 days after the rash appears. So if you think you might have shingles, contact your health care provider as soon as possible.

  13. Right now, there is one vaccine on the market. Called Zostavax, it has been approved for use in Europe and North America for the past 10 years and has been proven to reduce the chance of an outbreak overall by 64 percent. But with ingredients such as live chicken pox virus, it is difficult to produce in large quantities The result is that a single shot costs about $200 US, which is too costly for most government health insurance plans in Europe to cover. There are, however, exceptions: the United Kingdom has made it part of its National Health Service recommendations for people between the ages of 70 to 78 for the past three years. Sanofi Pasteur, which won the license to manufacture the vaccine in France, announced its availability in June 2015; it was also announced that  the vaccine will be reimbursed nationally in France for all adults aged 65 to 74 years. These ages are somewhat arbitrary, however, as even younger people – even, in the rare instance, children—can develop shingles, and government health plans don’t cover the cost of the vaccine for them.

Shingles usually appears as a line of irritated skin and blisters on one side of the chest and back. It can happen anywhere on the body, though, including on the face and near the eyes.

With life expectancies in Europe and North America longer than ever before, and with the baby boomer generation well into shingles territory, physicians are girding themselves to see more cases than ever before. Says Vesikari: “Think of it this way—if we all lived for 200 years, then everyone would develop shingles at some point.”

  14. As with chickenpox, there are degrees of symptoms experienced with shingles. Also, symptoms might be atypical in patients with compromised immune systems — such as caused by chemotherapy or AIDS.
    • A rash of small fluid-filled, bubble-like blisters that breaks out on reddened skin. The rash forms along a band, most commonly on the torso and buttocks, but also on the arms, legs, and face. In nearly all cases the rash occurs only on one side of the body. Within about 10 days, the blisters form scabs but the pain may persist much longer.
