Call for nominations Dermatology Life Quality Index was used according to the instructions given by Finlay and Khan, which has been validated in Chinese5. The Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) has been used in 33 different skin conditions and is available in 55 languages. DLQI comprises 10 items, giving a sum score ranging between 0 and 306. Ten questions concerning symptoms, embarrassment, shopping/daily activities, clothes, social/leisure, sport, work or study, relationships, sexual difficulties and treatment. High DLQI scores imply low quality of life. The DLQI has been used in cross-sectional studies of different disorders, such as acne, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Ten items were explained to all subjects and data collectors helped them to complete the survey questions. ^ Jump up to: a b c d e f Lynch, Peter J. (2004-01-01). Wear sunglasses when you are outdoors Neurodermatitis is a chronic, severely pruritic disorder characterized by 1 or more lichenified plaques in which the skin is thickened and there are accentuated skin markings. It affects adults, predominantly from ages 30 to 50 years. Women are affected more commonly than men. It may lead to demoralization, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, obsessive‐compulsive disorder, and distress through its impact on the patient's well‐being (Burgin, 2008). If the patient suffers from psychologic problems, the lesions are more likely to be persistent (Stander and Metze, 2009). Whether emotional factors are secondary to the primary dermatologic disease or they are primary and causative (altering perception of itch) is unclear. It has been postulated that neurotransmitters that affect mood, such as dopamine, serotonin, and opioid peptides, modulate perception of itch via descending spinal pathways (Burgin, 2008). Although not psoriasiform, mention is made of a recently described entity that clinically resembles lichen simplex chronicus or lichen amyloidosus but which has no histological similarities at all – pretibial pruritic papular dermatitis. The authors of that paper proposed that it was a response to chronic rubbing, possibly with other contributing factors such as xerosis, contact with irritants, and emotional distress. The lesions were red to flesh colored, pruritic papules 3–8 mm in diameter. There was a cobblestone appearance in some later lesions. Lesions were unilateral in 33/44 cases and bilateral in 11/44. The histology showed mild compact orthokeratosis, flattening of the rete ridges, superficial dermal fibrosis, and a mild to moderate superficial and mid-dermal infiltrate of lymphocytes, histiocytes and a few eosinophils. Stellate cells were present, probably a reflection of scratching. The published photomicrographs show some resemblance to pigmented purpuric dermatosis but there was no hemosiderin.

DLQI scores of patients with neurodermatitis was lower than that with psoriasis. Interestingly, we find there are no differences between Q1(symptoms) and Q9(sexual difficulties) when ten items are compared. Severe itching is a prominent feature of neurodermatitis, however psoriasis patients suffer from intensive itching are rarely concerned. Consistent with our finding, Szepietowski JC found that itching was found in 80% of psoriatic patients recently11. The presence and intensity of itching did not depend on age, gender, type of psoriasis, and duration of disease.

The cause of lichen simplex chronicus (neurodermatitis) is unknown, but certain triggers such as an insect bite and stress seem to play a role. In lichen simplex chronicus (neurodermatitis), the nerves in the skin appear be overly ready to tell the brain that there is itch. Sometimes, lichen simplex chronicus (neurodermatitis) can occur with a skin allergy.

In conclusion, neurodermatits moderately affected the QoL of the patients. People should pay more attention to the chronic disease, although it is not life-threatening. There are two limitations in this study: we were unable to compare QoL of patients before and after treatment, which could be incorporated in the planning of future studies. Another comment is related to the questionnaire itself, part of patients worried about the impact of diet on disease which does not exist in DLQI because of the different culture background.

Factors affecting skin barrier function might influence the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD). Previous reports have suggested higher rates of AD in areas with so-called hard water and among children born in fall or winter. This study looked for a possible synergistic relationship between these two AD risk factors. The researchers analyzed data on nearly 53,000 children from the Danish National Birth Cohort. National data sources were used to gather birth data and information on domestic water hardness, which differs across Danish regions. Physician diagnosis of AD and other characteristics were assessed in parental interviews when the children were 6 and 18 months old. Overall prevalence of AD was 15.0%. Prevalence ranged from 13.5% to 17.1% in regions with the softest versus hardest domestic water; relative prevalence of AD increased by 5% per 5-degree increase in water hardness. Hard water accounted for an estimated 2% of the population risk of AD. Relative prevalence of AD was 24% higher for children born in fall and 18% higher for those born in winter. There was no evidence of interaction between season of birth and water hardness. Both hard domestic water and fall/winter birth are associated with a higher prevalence of AD in early childhood. Risk of AD increases along with degree of water hardness, but there is no synergistic interaction between these two risk factors. Further studies are needed to see if water softening can reduce AD risk in infants.
