People who suspect they have shingles should see a doctor right away because to be effective, treatment must be started early. Doctors ask them to precisely describe the location of the pain. Related Websites Anyone who’s had chickenpox can get shingles. After you’ve been infected with chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus lies inactive in your body — mostly in spinal or cranial nerves — usually for many decades. If the virus reactivates, it can travel along nerve pathways to your skin and cause a rash to erupt.
Tuberculosis Despite treatment, an estimated 5 to 20 percent of shingles patients (3) will continue to experience pain for weeks or even years after the blisters heal. Those who are still feeling pain 90 or more days after the onset of the rash have a condition that’s called postherpetic neuralgia. (12)
Explore Everyday Health During chickenpox, the virus spreads in the bloodstream and infects collections of nerve cells (ganglia) of the spinal or cranial nerves. The virus remains in the ganglia in an inactive (dormant or latent) state. The virus may never cause symptoms again, or it may reactivate many years later. When it reactivates, the virus travels down the nerve fibers to the skin, where it creates painful sores resembling those of chickenpox. This outbreak of sores (shingles) almost always appears on a strip of the skin over the infected nerve fibers and only on one side of the body. This strip of skin, the area supplied by nerve fibers from a single spinal nerve region, is called a dermatome. Sores may also appear on the dermatomes next to the affected dermatome.

Farmers Market Match Programs Complete Blood Count (CBC) After diagnosis and appropriate treatment, apply cool tap-water compresses to weeping blisters for 20 minutes several times a day to soothe and help dry the blisters. This also aids in removing the scabs and decreases the potential for bacterial infection. Tap-water compresses must be stopped once the blisters have dried, so the surrounding skin does not become too dry and itchy. Remember that weeping blisters contain the virus and are contagious to individuals who are susceptible to the chickenpox virus.
Antiviral treatment can reduce pain and the duration of symptoms if started within one to three days after the onset of herpes zoster. Aciclovir 800 mg 5 times daily for 7 days is most often prescribed. Valaciclovir and famciclovir are also effective. The efficacy of prescribing systemic steroids is unproven.
Antiviral drugs, if started before blisters appear, can help relieve symptoms and help them resolve sooner, but pain relievers, including opioids, are often needed. U

Typically, one to three days after the pain starts, a rash with raised, red bumps and blisters erupts on the skin in the same distribution as the pain. They become pus-filled, then form scabs by about 10-12 days. In a few cases, only the pain is present without the rash or blisters. These painful red blisters and reddish rash follow a dermatomal distribution (a linear distribution that follows a the area supplied by one nerve, known as a dermatome); this usually occurs only on one side of the body and does not spread to other body sites in most individuals.

Bleeding Asthma Resources The diagnosis of shingles is primarily clinical, based upon the characteristic pain and band of rash and blisters. Laboratory testing for varicella zoster virus (VZV) may sometimes be performed to confirm or rule out VZV when a person has atypical symptoms and/or complications that may be due to another cause. It may also be performed for organ transplant recipients or pregnant women to help diagnose a current infection and to determine whether the person has been previously exposed to VZV – to help evaluate their immune status.
