There is a new shingles vaccine, which is preferred to the older (weakened live-virus) shingles vaccine. The new vaccine is a recombinant vaccine. Recombinant vaccines contain only pieces of a virus. The newer vaccine is recommended for healthy people aged 50 or over, regardless of whether they have had chickenpox or shingles and regardless of whether they have been vaccinated with the older shingles vaccine.

Diseases and Conditions A-Z In the US, there are an estimated one million cases of shingles each year, Almost one in three adults will get shingles in their lifetime and anyone who has had chickenpox is at risk of shingles. Shingles is associated with normal aging and anything that weakens the immune system such as certain medications, cancers, or infections, but it can also occur in healthy children and younger persons. Shingles is not passed from person to person.
The best way to prevent shingles is through vaccination. Vaccinate your children for chickenpox. This vaccine reduces their risk for getting chickenpox. You can’t get shingles unless you’ve had chickenpox first.
Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you have chickenpox, the chickenpox virus stays dormant (asleep) in your body. The virus can activate (wake up) years later and cause shingles.
Vitamin D Tests Widespread shingles Shingles may sound scary, but that’s mainly because of how it affects older people. The good news is that the infection doesn’t usually happen to teens. And, even when teens do get shingles, it’s usually not serious.

Wellness Programs Although most people will only have shingles once, the virus can potentially re-activate and cause shingles again. Those with weakened immune systems may have difficulty regaining and maintaining virus latency. A baby who is born with chickenpox is at an increased risk for developing pediatric shingles. This is a rare event that sometimes occurs when a woman has chickenpox, or – even more rarely – develops shingles, during her pregnancy.

While its most common complications are bacterial skin infections, other complications include inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) or pneumonia, although these are rare in otherwise healthy people. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year, in the U.S. alone, chickenpox complications result in the estimated hospitalization of 11,000 individuals—the majority of whom were otherwise healthy—and 105 deaths—the majority of whom are children.

The following may also put you at increased risk for shingles: Thanks to what the manufacturer, Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK), has called “unprecedented” demand for the vaccine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is advising doctors and providers to anticipate ordering limits and intermittent shipping delays until the end of 2018. While GSK has reported that shipments have just resumed and that “large volumes” of Shingrix will be going out every two to three weeks for the rest of the year, it’s also recommending that patients be prepared to call their pharmacy “often” or have the drugstore call them when the vaccine is back in stock.

Ad Choices Peritoneal Fluid Analysis Hematocrit After diagnosis and appropriate treatment, apply cool tap-water compresses to weeping blisters for 20 minutes several times a day to soothe and help dry the blisters. This also aids in removing the scabs and decreases the potential for bacterial infection. Tap-water compresses must be stopped once the blisters have dried, so the surrounding skin does not become too dry and itchy. Remember that weeping blisters contain the virus and are contagious to individuals who are susceptible to the chickenpox virus.

Wound Healing Because shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, it’s highly contagious. It’s easy to pass the virus on to people who aren’t immune to chickenpox (like people who have never had chickenpox or who didn’t get the chickenpox vaccine). Because the risk of severe complications from herpes zoster is more likely in older people, those aged over 60 years might consider zoster vaccine, which can reduce the incidence of herpes zoster by half. In people who do get herpes zoster despite being vaccinated, the symptoms are usually less severe and post-herpetic neuralgia is less likely to develop. In New Zealand, zoster vaccine will be funded from 1 April 2018 for people aged between 66 and 80 years old.
