Seborrheic dermatitis is a clinical diagnosis based on the location and appearance of lesions. In infants, it may present as thick white or yellow greasy scales on the scalp; it is usually benign and resolves spontaneously. In adolescents and adults, seborrheic dermatitis typically presents as flaky, greasy, erythematous patches on the scalp (Figure 1), nasolabial folds (Figure 2), ears, eyebrows (Figures 3 and 4), anterior chest, or upper back.3  The differential diagnosis is lengthy (Table 12,4), but the correct diagnosis can usually be made clinically by the characteristic distribution of lesions and varying course of the disease.5 If the diagnosis is uncertain, a biopsy demonstrating parakeratosis in the epidermis, plugged follicular ostia, and spongiosis can confirm the presence of seborrheic dermatitis. The diagnosis can be challenging in patients with darker skin, but the same principles apply. The condition affects people of all ages. Contact dermatitis, tenderness, xeroderma Data & Software 6. Antifungal Agents/administration & dosage* Students Seborrheic dermatitis is associated with normal levels of Malassezia but an abnormal immune response. Helper T cells, phytohemagglutinin and concanavalin stimulation, and antibody titers are depressed compared with those of control subjects. Zani et al report that even with antifungal treatments, there was no reduction in levels of Malassezia. [23] The contribution of Malassezia species to seborrheic dermatitis may come from its lipase activity—releasing inflammatory free fatty acids—and from its ability to activate the alternative complement pathway. [24] When an infant gets seborrheic dermatitis, it tends to form on the scalp and is known as cradle cap. During pre-pubertal years the incidence of seborrheic dermatitis reduces significantly until it spikes again in adolescence. Adults can be affected and the incidence increases again in the 60s and 70s.  Send to Peri-alar and melolabial (nasolabial) fold RESPIRATORY Newsletter Seborrheic dermatitis can affect both the scalp and the skin. Patients may be completely asymptomatic or notice varying degrees of scalp itching, redress, flaking and scaling. The scalp may become greasy with patients feeling that more frequent shampooing just makes things feel better. The eyebrows can also be affected by redness and flaking. Many patients with seborrheic dermatitis have red flaky patches arund the nose, on the mid-chest and even back.
