In infants, seborrheic dermatitis self-resolves with gentle skin care (i.e., moisturizers), though topical steroids or topical antifungals may be used in severe cases. In adults, however, seborrheic dermatitis tends to be chronic. There is no cure thus the goal is to control the rash and associated symptoms. Treatments include anti-fungal shampoos and creams, topical anti-inflammatory agents, and topical steroids. The selected treatment must be used regularly in order to effectively control seborrheic dermatitis. The treatment schedule and combination of medications your doctor prescribes to you will depend on the severity of your symptoms, the location of disease, and your hair and skin type. Many treatments for seborrheic dermatitis are available over the counter including medicated shampoos (e.g., ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, salicylic acid, and tar) and low-strength topical steroids. Some cases of seborrheic dermatitis require prescription medications in order to obtain satisfactory improvement. Pigmentary changes associated with seborrheic dermatitis typically improve with treatment. Powered By Decision Support in Medicine Gupta AK, Versteeg SG. Pigmentary changes associated with seborrheic dermatitis typically improve with treatment. How do I know if I have seborrheic dermatitis? Many infants get cradle cap. This is a type of seborrheic dermatitis (seb-uh-ree-ick dur-muh-tahy-tis) that develops in babies. Scaly, greasy patches form on the baby’s scalp. The patches can become thick and crusty, but cradle cap is harmless. Cradle cap usually goes away on its own within a few months. Seborrheic dermatitis is a papulosquamous disorder patterned on the sebum-rich areas of the scalp, face, and trunk. When localized to the scalp, it is commonly referred to as dandruff. In addition to sebum, this dermatitis is linked to Malassezia, [1] immunologic abnormalities, and activation of complement. It is commonly aggravated by changes in humidity, changes in seasons, trauma (eg, scratching), or emotional stress. The severity varies from mild dandruff to exfoliative erythroderma. Seborrheic dermatitis may worsen in Parkinson disease and in AIDS. [21, 22]  Increased perspiration in Parkinson disease may be the link to seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis is a condition that dermatologists frequently diagnose and treat. Contagious skin diseases Although the pathophysiology of seborrheic dermatitis is not completely understood, the mechanisms of effective therapies coupled with results of recent biomolecular studies provide clues about the causes. The redness, itching, and scaling associated with seborrheic dermatitis are caused by changes in skin cell functioning.6,7 Malassezia yeast seems to cause a nonspecific immune response that begins the cascade of skin changes that occur in seborrheic dermatitis.6 Malassezia is a normal component of skin flora, but in persons with seborrheic dermatitis, the yeast invade the stratum corneum, releasing lipases that result in free fatty acid formation and cause the inflammatory process to begin.8 Malassezia thrive in high-lipid environments, so the presence of free fatty acids enhances the growth of the yeast. The inflammation causes stratum corneum hyperproliferation (scaling) and incomplete corneocyte differentiation, which alters the stratum corneum barrier and impairs its function, thus increasing access for Malassezia and allowing water to more readily leave the cells.8 Compounding toolkit MedicineNet Your privacy is important to us.
