Kligman AM The skin disease is based on a hereditary predisposition. The symptoms appear in the first five years of life in 85% of cases. In atopic dermatitis the condition of the skin is constantly changing. The symptoms can appear simultaneously or in varying degrees.

Stress is said to be one important parameter, among others, in the manifestation or aggravation of several psychological disturbances, psychosomatic illnesses, and psychiatric disorders, including burnout, anorexia nervosa, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), asthma, neurodermatitis, major depression, schizophrenia, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which are sometimes referred to as stress-related disorders. The notion that stress contributes somehow to onset or progression of these disorders does not indicate how strong the influence of stress is compared to other important contributing factors, such as genetic predisposition or organic diseases.

That itching feeling that is normal for dry patches of skin may have no effect on some people and a chronic effect on others. The incidence of neurodermatitis, which is also known as atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema, and of psoriasis have increased in the last ten to fifteen years. Neurodermatitis is characterized by chronic itching or scaling of the skin. It starts with a patch of itchy skin, which leads to scratching. Scratching makes the affected area even itchier and the sufferer scratches a little more until he or she scratches out of habit. Chronic itching and scratching can cause the affected area to become thick and leathery. It is therefore essential to break this itch-scratch cycle.
Skin-derived aeroallergen-specific T-cell clones of Th2 phenotype in patients with atopic dermatitis. Exacerbation of a cutaneous process in a connection with a use of food products (milk, eggs, pork, poultry, crabs, eggs, honey, sweets, fruits and berries, alcohol, spices, etc.). Neurodermatitis is diagnosed in more than 90% of children and in 70% of adults. Generally, polyvalent sensitivity is detected. In children, there is seasonal increase of sensitivity to food products. With age, a role of inhaled allergens (house dust, hairs of wool, cotton, feathers, molds, perfumes, dyes, as well as wool, fur, synthetic and other fabrics) becomes more noticeable in the development of dermatitis. Unfavorable weather conditions aggravate disease course.

Atopic dermatitis is a highly pruritic chronic inflammatory skin disorder affecting 10–20% of children worldwide. Symptoms can persist or begin in adulthood. It is also the most common cause of occupational skin disease in adults. This disease results from an interaction between susceptibility genes, the host’s environment, pharmacological abnormalities, skin barrier defects, and immunological factors. New management approaches have evolved from advances in our understanding of the pathobiology of this common skin disorder.

Become a member Neill and Ridley (2001) reported that anogenital lichen sclerosus may commonly cause sexual dysfunction. Other vulvar dermatoses such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, squamous cell hyperplasia, lichen simplex chronicus, contact dermatitis, and erosive lichen planus can result in vulvodynia, dyspareunia, and sexual dysfunction (Davis and Hutchison, 1999; Burrows et al, 2008). Because anogenital skin lesions may result in difficulties in sexual function, we did not include patients with anogenital neurodermatitis in our study.
Lichen simplex chronicus (also called “neurodermatitis”) is a chronic eczematous eruption of the skin that is the result of scratching (Fig. 8.13). Pruritus precedes the scratching and may be precipitated by frustration, depression, and stress. The scratching then causes the lichenification and further itching, resulting in an “itch–scratch–itch” cycle that perpetuates the process.
AAD Dermatology Buyer’s Guide In the pathogenesis of neurodermatitis as well as eczema, the leading role belongs to a dysfunction of immune, central and autonomic nervous systems. The basis of immunological disorders is a reduction of a number and functional activity of T-lymphocytes, especially T-suppressors, regulating immunoglobulin E synthesis by B-lymphocytes. IgE binds to blood basophiles and mast cells, which start to produce histamine, causing immediate hypersensitivity development.

Another cause of Kaposi varicelliform eruption is vaccination with vaccinia for the prevention of small pox, but because this is no longer mandatory, patients with AD do not develop the sequelae of eczema vaccinatum that has been seen in the past. It was usually contracted by the patient from the vaccination of themselves or their close relatives. This condition had a high mortality rate (up to 25%). In the current climate of threats of bioterrorism, vaccination may once again become necessary, and physicians should be aware of eczema vaccinatum in this setting.

Close Depression Formulary Vidal’s disease (syn.: lichen simplex chronicus Vidal, dermatitis lichenoides pruriens Neisser) is clinically manifested by one or more strongly dry itchy plaques, located mainly on the posterolateral surfaces of the neck, in the folds of skin and surrounded by small papular elements and minor pigmentation, mildly turning into normal skin. Sometimes in the areas of scratching depigmentation develops. In the presence of pronounced infiltration and lichenification, hypertrophic warty foci of lesions can occur. Rare variants include depigmented, linear, moniliform, decalvans, psoriasiform neurodermatitis, and Pautrier’s giant lichenification.
