The chickenpox virus (varicella-zoster, VZV) may remain in a dormant state in the body after an individual has chickenpox, usually in the roots of nerves that control sensation. In about one out of five people previously infected with chickenpox, the virus “wakes up,” or reactivates, often many years or decades after a childhood chickenpox infection. When the virus is reactivated and causes shingles, the resulting virus is usually referred to as herpes zoster virus. Researchers do not know what causes this reactivation. What is known is that after reactivation, the virus travels along a sensory nerve into the skin and causes shingles.

The virus begins to reproduce again and moves outward along the length of one or more sensory nerves to the surface of the skin. This can cause symptoms associated with shingles, including a ribbon or band of lesions on one side of the trunk, face, or arm corresponding to the section of skin (dermatome) that the affected nerve serves.

Si tengo alguna duda te volveré a esscribir.De nuevo mil gracias.Loli

Pulmonology Advisor KidsHealth / For Parents / Pityriasis Versicolor Sometimes tinea versicolor comes back again after successful treatment. If this keeps happening, doctors sometimes recommend using a special shampoo (containing an active ingredient like selenium sulfide or ketoconazole) on your skin and hair every two to four weeks. There are also oral medications (tablets) that can be taken every four weeks to prevent tinea versicolor from returning. This can greatly reduce the risk of it coming back.

During the summer months when the temperature and humidity are high, the yeast can increase. The excess yeast on the skin prevents the normal pigmentation process, so both light and dark colored spots can result.
For Developers WebMD Mobile Refer a Patient In steroid-associated atrophying tinea versicolor, the Malassezia infecting the epidermis may impair the barrier function of skin, thus allowing improved penetration of topical corticosteroids. This may lead to enhanced corticosteroid-induced atrophy of the affected skin. [16, 17, 18] However, as atrophying tinea versicolor has been reported in patients who have not used topical steroids, it has been proposed that a T-cell–mediated immune response to the Malassezia organism may be responsible for the atrophy noted. This theory suggests that Th1 cytokines recruit histiocytes to the site of epidermal infection. These histiocytes serve as a source of elastases and they up-regulate the metalloproteinase activity, ultimately leading to atrophy of the affected epidermis. [17, 19, 20]

Recurrent Headaches in a 31-yr-old Woman 2 Citing Articles The diagnosis of tinea versicolor is often made clinically (by appearance), but the best way to make the diagnosis is with a potassium hydroxide (KOH) scraping that shows a characteristic “spaghetti and meatballs” of hyphae (which resemble long branches) and spores (spheres). Sometimes the yeast can be found after stripping the skin surface with clear adhesive tape and examining the tape under the microscope. Culture on regular fungal culture media requires the addition of fatty acids such as olive oil and is rarely necessary for diagnosis. Biopsy may show the yeast hyphae and spores, but biopsies are generally only recommended for unusual cases and those not responding to therapy in the consideration of other diagnoses.

Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating Malassezia furfur is a dimorphic fungus that is normally a harmless component of normal skin flora but that in some people causes tinea versicolor. Most affected people are healthy. Factors that may predispose to tinea versicolor include heat and humidity and immunosuppression due to corticosteroids, pregnancy, undernutrition, diabetes, or other disorders. Hypopigmentation in tinea versicolor is due to the inhibition of tyrosinase caused by M. furfur production of azelaic acid.

Summer skin rashes Previous Laboratory Studies The organism is lipophilic, and lipids are essential for growth in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, the mycelial stage can be induced in vitro by the addition of cholesterol and cholesterol esters to the appropriate medium. Because the organism more rapidly colonizes humans during puberty when skin lipids are increased more than that of adolescent levels and tinea versicolor is manifested in sebum-rich areas (eg, chest, back), individual variations in skin surface lipids are hypothesized to play a major role in disease pathogenesis. However, patients with tinea versicolor and control subjects do not demonstrate any quantitative or qualitative differences in skin surface lipids. Skin surface lipids are significant for the normal presence of M furfur on human skin, but they probably play little role in the pathogenesis of tinea versicolor.

Employees The yeast tends to live on dead skin and gravitates towards oil. Also, the yeast tends to spread in warm, humid weather, which is why I was always noticing it more in the late spring and summer. “The yeast is an opportunist, so when conditions are ripe for it to multiply, it gets going,” says Schultz. No wonder the American Academy of Dermatology lists it as one of the most common skin diseases in tropical and sub-tropical areas. Once you’ve been diagnosed with tinea versicolor, it’s not something that can be cured. The yeast malassezia is always there as a part of the microbial ecosystem on your skin, and the patches can keep recurring, but there are ways to manage the symptoms.

In patients with recalcitrant chronic paronychia, en bloc excision of the proximal nail fold is effective. Simultaneous avulsion of the nail plate (total or partial, restricted to the base of the nail plate) improves surgical outcomes.8,32 Alternatively, an eponychial marsupialization, with or without nail removal, may be performed.33 This technique involves excision of a semicircular skin section proximal to the nail fold and parallel to the eponychium, expanding to the edge of the nail fold on both sides.33 Paronychia induced by the EGFR inhibitor cetuximab can be treated with an antibiotic such as doxycycline (Vibramycin).28 In patients with paronychia induced by indinavir, substitution of an alternative antiretroviral regimen that retains lamivudine and other protease inhibitors can resolve retinoid-like manifestations without recurrences.25

In chronic paronychia, the redness and tenderness are usually less noticeable. The skin around the nail will tend to look baggy, often with the separation of the cuticle from the nail bed. The nail itself will often become thickened and discolored with pronounced horizontal grooves on the nail surface. There may even be green discoloration in cases of Pseudomonas infection.

Strep Throat The diagnosis of acute paronychia is based on a history of minor trauma and findings on physical examination of nail folds. The digital pressure test may be helpful in the early stages of infection when there is doubt about the presence or extent of an abscess.14 The test is performed by having the patient oppose the thumb and affected finger, thereby applying light pressure to the distal volar aspect of the affected digit. The increase in pressure within the nail fold (particularly in the abscess cavity) causes blanching of the overlying skin and clear demarcation of the abscess. In patients with severe infection or abscess, a specimen should be obtained to identify the responsible pathogen and to rule out methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infection.13

Optimal Therapeutic Approach for this Disease In patients with acute paronychia, only one nail is typically involved.10 The condition is characterized by rapid onset of erythema, edema, and discomfort or tenderness of the proximal and lateral nail folds,11 usually two to five days after the trauma. Patients with paronychia may initially present with only superficial infection and accumulation of purulent material under the nail fold, as indicated by drainage of pus when the nail fold is compressed12,13 (Figure 2). An untreated infection may evolve into a subungual abscess, with pain and inflammation of the nail matrix.11 As a consequence, transient or permanent dystrophy of the nail plate may occur.10 Pus formation can proximally separate the nail from its underlying attachment, causing elevation of the nail plate.10,11 Recurrent acute paronychia may evolve into chronic paronychia.7,12

Your genes. Rosacea often runs in families. Surgery frequently treats rhinophyma of the nose. A physician uses a scalpel, laser, or electro surgery to remove the excess tissue. Dermabrasion can help improve the look of the scar tissue. Follow-up treatments with laser or intense pulsed light may help lessen the redness. Medical maintenance therapy with oral and or topical antibiotics may be useful to decrease the chance of recurrence.
Getting treatment is a must, so make sure you see your doctor. If you don’t take care of your rosacea, redness and swelling can get worse and might become permanent.

It is unclear why seborrheic dermatitis develops. As mentioned, seborrheic dermatitis is more common in men. Although the exact incidence and prevalence are unknown, seborrheic dermatitis typically begins in two age groups. The infantile form begins at about 1 week of age and may last for several months but is a self-limited disease. The adult type begins in the 4-6th decades of life and is a chronic, waxing and waning skin condition. There is no evidence of horizontal spread of seborrheic dermatitis.
Medical Products Skin dictionary Initial therapy may include a medium-potency topical steroid (triamcinolone can be prescribed in a 1 pound jar) ointment applied to affected skin (avoiding facial skin) twice every day. The addition of the soak and smear method (soak in a warm water tub with no soap for 15-20 minutes; while still wet, apply the topical steroid, then dress in cotton pajamas and/or a vinyl sauna suit, preferably worn over damp cotton pajamas) will often speed improvement, as well as reduce pruritus dramatically. Patients must be cautious not to employ this modality for longer than 1-2 weeks to prevent side effects.
