Ambrosia Arch Dermatol Sex & Relationships In dermatology, the study of this subject is quite new. Niemeier et al (1997) compared sexual behaviors in patients with psoriasis, neurodermatitis, and controls. Patients with skin diseases had a significantly impaired sexual life, compared with healthy controls (Niemeier et al, 1997). Gupta and Gupta (1997) reported that 40.8% of patients with psoriasis expressed that their sexual activity had diminished since the onset of their skin disease. Sampogna et al (2007) investigated the sexual life in patients with psoriasis with 2 dermatology‐specific questionnaires (Skindex‐29 and DLQI) and 2 psoriasis‐specific questionnaires (Psoriasis Disability Index [PDI] and Impact of Psoriasis on Quality of Life Questionnaire [IPSO]). Of 936 patients, 35.5% (PDI) to 71.3% (IPSO) reported sexual problems because of psoriasis. Mercan et al (2008) used the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX) to compare sexual function in 31 patients with neurodermatitis, 24 patients with psoriasis, and 33 control cases. They found that the neurodermatitis group had more sexual problems than the psoriasis group and the control group. Sukan and Maner (2007) used the ASEX to examine sexual problems in 50 patients with vitiligo, 50 patients with chronic urticaria, and 50 healthy controls. The total scores of the ASEX in the female patient groups were significantly higher than those in controls. The score for satisfaction from orgasm in male patients was less than that in controls. In men, differences in other subitem scores of ASEX were not significant between the patient groups and controls.

Cancer biology Quality of life of the patients with neurodermatitis was assessed with the Turkish version of the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). The DLQI is a 10‐item self‐administered instrument that measures physical function, work status, social and sport activities, depression, anxiety, pain, and well‐being. Question 9 of the DLQI is associated with sexual function (Öztürkcan et al, 2006). It has been used worldwide in more than 45,000 patients with at least 33 different diseases (Basra et al, 2008). In the DLQI, higher scores signify poorer quality of life, and patients with dermatologic diseases have scores typically ranging from 5 to 15.

Using sunscreen will help protect your skin, and cosmetics can cover up the patches. Treatments for vitiligo include medicines, light therapy, and surgery. Not every treatment is right for everyone. Many have side effects. Some take a long time. Some do not always work.
The only sign of vitiligo is the presence of pale patchy areas of depigmented skin which tend to occur on the extremities.[6][7] Some people may experience itching before a new patch occurs.[8] The patches are initially small, but often grow and change shape.[6][9] When skin lesions occur, they are most prominent on the face, hands and wrists.[6][7] The loss of skin pigmentation is particularly noticeable around body orifices, such as the mouth, eyes, nostrils, genitalia and umbilicus.[6][7] Some lesions have increased skin pigment around the edges.[10] Those affected by vitiligo who are stigmatized for their condition may experience depression and similar mood disorders.[11]

Clinically, paronychia presents as an acute or chronic (longer than six weeks’ duration) condition. People with occupations such as baker, bartender and dishwasher seem predisposed to developing chronic paronychia. Treatment may consist of warm-water soaks, antimicrobial therapy or surgical intervention.
Contents When abscess or fluctuance is present, efforts to induce spontaneous drainage or surgical drainage become necessary. If the paronychia is neglected, pus may spread under the nail sulcus to the opposite side, resulting in what is known as a “run-around abscess.”8 Pus may also accumulate beneath the nail itself and lift the plate off the underlying matrix. These advanced cases may require more complex treatment, including removal of the nail to allow adequate drainage.

The diagnosis of shingles is primarily clinical, based upon the characteristic pain and band of rash and blisters. Laboratory testing for varicella zoster virus (VZV) may sometimes be performed to confirm or rule out VZV when a person has atypical symptoms and/or complications that may be due to another cause. It may also be performed for organ transplant recipients or pregnant women to help diagnose a current infection and to determine whether the person has been previously exposed to VZV – to help evaluate their immune status. What is pityriasis versicolor? There are a few things you can do to prevent tinea versicolor. For starters, wear loose-fitting clothing: tight clothes create a breeding ground for yeast, so stick to breathable fabrics, says Dr. Katta. You should also shower immediately after your workout to prevent a sticky, warm space for yeast to grow.
Tweets by Mount Sinai Brooklyn Symptom Checker The diagnosis of tinea versicolor is often made clinically (by appearance), but the best way to make the diagnosis is with a potassium hydroxide (KOH) scraping that shows a characteristic “spaghetti and meatballs” of hyphae (which resemble long branches) and spores (spheres). Sometimes the yeast can be found after stripping the skin surface with clear adhesive tape and examining the tape under the microscope. Culture on regular fungal culture media requires the addition of fatty acids such as olive oil and is rarely necessary for diagnosis. Biopsy may show the yeast hyphae and spores, but biopsies are generally only recommended for unusual cases and those not responding to therapy in the consideration of other diagnoses.
